Heater controls- Preventative Maintenance?

Hi,

 

I know this has been discussed a thousand times before- but can someone just answer this dead easy question- its giving me a headache looking through all the old posts :(

 

My heater controls are still working (thank the lord) is there a bit I need to remove from the mechanism before it snaps off and jams everything up- or is it a bit more complicated than that?

 

Its just they seem to be getting stickier and its that last thing I need right now for them to go too :roll:
