Advice on a VR6

Recommended Posts

Not a buying guide question but more of a general one. I might be going to look at a local VR I've seen for sale, however, in the description it says that it's been stood for 6 months but that it runs well.

I'm thinking that it might need new oil, tyres, brake pads (and disks?) any more things to add to the list/check?

It's a '93 K plater with 102K miles, 17" wheels for a cheap(ish) price.

Cheers,

Tom

*edit* Title changed. Someone buy it before I give in :-)

It might need any of those things, but that's not necessarily related to the fact that it's stood still for six months.

There have been a few good discussions on how to treat a car that's stood for a while, but I would imagine it's too late now because if "it runs well" it's probably already been fired up.

Look for seized handbrake mechanisms and wheel bearings and sticky calipers though.

I had a look today, and it's an early VR, as it has the early interior, 150K miles (not 102K as I optimistically thought) but after running very roughly on idle for about 5 minutes, I turn it off and re-started and it sounded very nice... Last serviced at a Stealership in 98 showing 102K though.

A question for VR6 owners though, did the early VRs have ABS or is the warning light just cream crackered?

Off to make a decision I think...

Cheers,

Tom

afaik all the VR's had abs mate, nice colour and wheels

did ya lift the oil filler and check for mayo? how did it drive ?

No mayo, and no oil in the header tank. Gearbox seemed smooth, and no problems engaging any of the gears, BUT because it was at the back, all I did was idle/rev it, not actually drive it (yet). The bodywork was in good nick, although there was a sratch on the bonnet.

Interior pretty good, seats in good condition, sunroof, heater controls, and spoiler all working. Seat hight adjustment handle bust, seat handle for moving it forward missing, cracked front fog light (but none of them work) and this ABS problem.

It ran lumpy as hell to start with and I was about to walk, but after turning it off and on again, it really settled to a beautiful purr. What a sound! Did seem to missfire slightly as the revs came down after letting off though.

To say I'm tempted would be an understatement :-)

Is it worth it for the £2K being asked?

difficult to say without actually seeing it mate, the problems seem small but the abs could be pricey to repair or it could just be the bulb !

thats the cheapest vr i've heard of though, did you check underneath and corrosion on the brake lines ?

is there any mot on it ?

did it misfire on the way down the revs ? mine will kind of barble on the way down almost like its the back pressure in the exhaust

There was a bump on the pedal, but no light, so it looks like another bulb job to add to the other one that I've remembered, the left hand indicator on the dial pod.

Could have quite well have been a burble rather than a misfire, thinking about it.

Still, either way, I've thought about it all afternoon, and I would LOVE to buy it, and could afford it...unless anything major went wrong.

So, if anyone wants a £2K VR as a project it's in Autotrader for £3K from Headways Motor Company (01132 310070), 269 Tong Road, Leeds, LS12 4NQ.

The company know nothing about 'rados as they took it in p/x against a Porsche. It was idling so badly at first, I thought it had a broken engine mount and point this out along with the other stuff, hence the price.

It has no alarm/immob but 12 months MOT and they want rid of it.

If anyone wants pics and the report from VW, let me know, as I'd love it to go to a good home (ie. someone on here).

Cheers,

Tom

No light at all? You won't feel any ABS-related bumps through the pedal till the ABS valve block runs through it's self test at 10km/h on first pulling away. How many ABS lights fail? Not many - more likely is someone trying to hide an ABS fault.

Very true, still that probably means that it could be negotiated below £2K...

R1-Jay, it was LC5U - Aqua Blue Pearl Effect according to the boot sticker.

You can certainly use the ABS light (or lack of) as leverage cos that MOT certificate isn't legal if the ABS light didn't work when it was written out ..

I've only owned my VR for 7 weeks and that had been stood for nearly 12 months before i bought it (as member Kieron will no doubt testify!)... anyways, the idle was shot to $hit when i first got it too... :(

...previous posts had suggested it may be the MAF, but a quick look-over at the local VW specialist found that the Idle Control Valve was just choked up with gunk... a clean out, plus the service sorted it all and it drives brilliantly now (as the daft git in the MR2 on the A326 will also testify!!)

for 2K i'd say give it a go... if it really bites you later there's always gonna be someone waiting to take it off you or at the very least people who need the spares!

jazzdevil, If I had the space for a second car, believe me I would... However I've got to pay the council for the privilege of parking my valver on the street, and the permits get stupidly expensive after the first car.

Still doesn't stop me bein' tempted though :-)

i was seriously tempted to go and see this car two weeks ago - geezer said he'd take anything over 2k for it.

Shame it's so far from me - plus the lack of alarm means a further 399 to lash out to install a new one.

Let us know if you buy it . . . .
