FiskoVR6 0 Posted September 22, 2005 I have been told I have a faulty ABS pump as no reading can be taken from the modulator. Phoned VW dealer for price, OUCH! :shock: , and was told that they are very reliable and to book in for VAG diagnostic as he suspects a sensor fault. You realy need VAG COM to diagnose the fault (similar to the dealers diagnostic tool) Who told you that it maybe a faulty pump and how did they come to that conclusion?? If a wheel sensor is suspect you can read the resistance across the sensors to comapre and show up one that is suspect - have a search on here for info.. FiskoVR6 0 Posted September 22, 2005 It was diagnosed at a non VW garage, not sure what diagnostic system they used, but they said that they could not get a reading from the modulator. I was wondering whether this was because of the equipment they used or if no reading can obtained if the sensor was faulty? I haven't got a clue! Kevin Bacon 5 Posted September 22, 2005 VAG-COM (third party equivalent to VW 1551 and 1552) translates the DTC codes better. If the pump itself is knackered, you're looking for codes like:- "Differential lock valve - no signal or faulty" "LHR outlet valve - XXXX" "RHR outlet valve - XXXX" And so on and so forth. No signal from modulator sounds ominous. The ECU for the ABS is behind the passenger side kick panel. Try checking the connections in there because sometimes Corrados leak water into the cabin via the leaf guard, which can drip onto the ABS ECU connections. I have a nasty feeling that "no signal from Modulator" could in fact be no signal from the ABS ECU, in which case that is not good, and as you say, ££££s from VW. When you start the car, does the orange ABS light come on briefly and then go out? Or does it stay on? If not light at all, check the bulb, believe it or not, people with knowingly dodgy ABS break the bulb as to throw buyers off the scent. The light is there as a check of the ABS system and if it stays on, there is a fault. Have you tried the ABS? Find a quiet road and jam the brakes on hard....if the wheels skid, you obviously have no anti lock Quote Share this post Link to post Share on other sites

Supercharged 2 Posted September 22, 2005 Yeah - was just thinking about the ECU, as Kev says check it and check the plug for signs of corrosion - squirt of contact cleaner or WD40 won't hurt... FiskoVR6 0 Posted September 22, 2005 I have not experienced any skidding at all, but will test brakes in a bit. The brakes seem the same as they always were. The ABS light was flickering on whilst driving at first. some days it would stay on until I switched engine off. Now it is always on, right in my eye line! Me, being the excited kid as i was when i bought my VR, totally forgot about the ABS light. When i got it home, i discovered that the previous owner, or the garage i bought it from, had gutted the ABS light. All that was left was the plastic shell.. And the damn ABS wasn't covered by the warranty that i haggled so deperately for.. Had it checked on VAG-COM, and sure enough the fault was left rear inlet valve - Nxx something. Luckily i managed to pick up a new pump unit from a breakers in Kent for £130 including VAT and delivery. Had it fitted by my local specialist, and the fault disappeared. As for trying to get the warning light sorted, that took me another 3 years to find the right one. Eventually got one off ebay... Hope yours is slightly more simple to fix James... Turned out to be a sensor :D , but abs was working still!?! £30 ish instead of £1600! Right result. Thanks again mate. I'll have more spare cash now to start to get my VR into the league of yours!
