I was thinking maybe not a magnesium alloy as I would've thought they'd be on more expensive cars - didn't realise they're illegal in this country though.

Magnesium burns readily with a blindingly hot flame. Not good in a crash - I would not be surprised if it were illegal on the public road.

Still, they let us carry around loads of petrol, dont they?

er they don't use pure magnesium,

They use a magnesium alloy, which makes lighter wheels for the same strength as those cast from aluminium alloy, but the material is more expesive.

I very much doubt they are illegal?! see http://www.alibaba.com/catalog/11154374/Magnesium_Alloy_Wheel.html

They make some high-end mountain bike frames (scandium ones) from magnesium-alloy (and some naff ones - remember the kirk revolution??)

To answer your question, speedlines are cast from an aluminium-alloy.
