Engine whistle

Recommended Posts

I've noticed recently that when I accelerate hard in lower gears (1st and 2nd mostly) there is a whistle which sounds like its coming from the front of the car somewhere and possibly an engine noise.

Any ideas?

There is an underlying alternator whine on VRs but keep an eye on it because if the whine gets louder, it could be the belt tensioner pulley's bearing dying.

Is it a 16V, if the cam belt is too tight they have strange 'zing' to them.

Gavin

It's a vr6

I don't notice it at high revs in 3rd gear and above.

I'll see if I can get it to whistle at standstill (haven't tried that yet) and check the alternator Kev.

i changed the throttle body on mine last year and the whistle disappeared. I'd guess its caused by an air leak, probably wear related but never thought to investigate it as i also thought it was normal.

Mr.Ots, I notice my alternator most in 2nd when booting it from about 2000 rpm. There's a very faint whine and only lasts for a second, maybe less but I know it's the alt, which is new incidentally. As the rpm rises, the pitch and volume reduce.

I would check the belt tensioner bearing to outrule that. Slacken the belt and spin the plastic pulley by hand. It should be smooth with no lateral play.
