G60 Supercharger Question

Recommended Posts

Hi all, I have just bought a v.clean G60 (1991 Inca Blue) really loving it.

However: I bought it from a frend who deals a bit in older VWs and he told me that the Charger had been reconditioned at 80K there is now 96K on the clock so i thought i wouldnt have to worry bout gettin the charger done for another while.

I am now starting to wonder if the charger was ever done, it definatly wasnt done at Jabba because i rang them and they said that there should be a number and a sticker on the charger if they had done it and there is no markings on the chager other than the factory serial no.

Ther car is also using alot of Oil and when i opened the pipe from the charger to the Intercooler there was oil in it.

So my Q is how do i know if the charger has been reconditioned?

Is there any way of Knowing if the chargewr is on its last Legs?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I think a little bit of oil is ok, but if there is a lot then you should try and get it looked at. I'm no expert on the matter, but someone on here will have a better answer for you pretty soon.

Yeah.. a very thin film of oil in that pipe is apparently acceptable but if there is quite a lot in there, then things aren't so good..

I'd suggest you go take a look at the buyers guide (here)which has a procedure for testing boost pressure - should help you determine whether the charger is giving the sort of pressure its supposed to or not.. if its way down on power then you need to get it looked at pronto!

Right well i just got back from testin her.

Results are not good.

The Highest no. I got was 1560

That about confirms it i guess. :(

Just Edit to ask: Should i stop driving it until i have had the supercharger checked?? or whats the next step?

Those numbers aren't the end of the world for a non ported, std pulley charger. BUT you should make it a priority to get it fettled asap.

If you knock off 1000 MB for a std atmosphere, then 560 would be about 8PSI which isn't that far off the service limit according to VW.

Did you really wind the car up? you need to rev them hard. A good straight road and 3rd gear to the red line is what you need.

Another Inka blue G60 owner, we're a rare breed y'know? If there's no evidence of a rebuild then definately get that done pronto or you could be having to replace an exploded supercharger which is about £800. Either JMR (07974 020031) or G-Werks are the chaps to go to and both have a good rep. They can also look over the car and give it a general health check, always a good idea if it's a recently purchased car that you don't know too much about. When I got mine, I took it to John (JMR) and he spent a whole Saturday afternoon looking over the car and wrote a report on exactly what needed to be done. I've dealt with JMR and G-Works though and they're both good outfits. Bear in mind though that John does this in his spare time so you'd have to leave a messgae on his answerphone probably if you call between 9 and 5. :) Up the Inkas!

I'd just like to point out G60IRL's location.. I think if anything he'd be removing the charger and posting it over to a specialist as it'd be a bit of an expensive (and long) trip over from Ireland! :)

h100vw=> Yeah i put her to over 6000RPM (130mph in 4th gear what a car!) so pretty sure the pressure wasnt going to go much higher.

Guess the pressure could be worse but it wouldnt be as good as i would have hoped from a supposedly reconditioned charger.

:D You beat me to it Jim. It would be a bit far to travel, thinkin of taking it out and shipping it to G-werks.

I dont really mind doing the charger if it needs doing. Kinda half expected to do it at some stage or another plus the car is really clean outside and in top condition so dont mind adding to it.

Just dont want to end up with a blown charger. (can somebody pleast tell me what exactly happens the chargers? the seals go, the oil gets in so what happens next?)

Think your speedo is a little wrong, mine does 116mph @ 6170 rpm in 4th, had it upto like 120mph in 4th, and that must be nearly on the limiter!

The seals leaking in the charger wont do much damage, its if the bearings go, or the small toothed belt breaks/strips, the charger just munches itself to bits(lots of little ones that get stuck in the pipes and ic!)

Have a listen to it when its cold, using a screwdriver as a stethascope, I wouldnt be driving it if its making any knocking or strange noises!

Yeah it might be a little wrong but you cant beat comin down a nice long entry ramp and unto a downhill section of dual carrageway. Also between readin the charger pressure and tryin to drive, i hold my hands up i guess i could have read it wrong too. :)

Edit: Cheers Bix ill listen to it when i get a chance

Hi G60IRL,

We are getting more and more irish corrado owners on here 8)

Where abouts in the country are you located?

One thing worth checking is does the silencer box on the exit of the charger have a crack in it?

mine did and put out simular boose, but i changed it for a fmic and it made a huge difference.

I would be warey about driving it too much to be honest until i had checked that out.

Its not too expencive to ship to the uk and get them done several of my mates have done this. and its great piece of mind too

Welcome to the site anyway

€20 to post my charger by an Post if memory serves correctly from way back in the day when I had my G40 charger serviced, taking into account the extra weight and inflation you could be talking €40 odd for the G60 one now.

Yeah cost me €40 to ship my charger over to JMR. John worked on the charger over the weekend including Saturday night and had it in the post to me first thing Monday morning. And with the extra porting work John carried out on the charger the car really pulls well.

Give John a ring and explain the situation. He will have your charger serviced and ship back to in no time.

Thanks Everyone the amount i have already learned from this site is incredible.

I am based in Wicklow but in Dublin quite a bit so pretty local to some of you Irish lads.

Dont think ill post it with the way things are with An Post at the moment, DHL or some of them might be a safer way to go.

Yeah that makes sense, i am in dublin as are a few of the lads

DHL or FedEx are grand and it wont cost the earth to send it off and get it looked over.

Worth doing the chip and pulley trick at the same time mind you, makes things work a bit better

I think you'll be surprised with the DHL price. I was anyway. 46euro with an Post and that was insured.

But who knows when the shower will go back to work. I have a few bits in the post office waiting to be picked up but Im not going out of my way to go down to them to find out they are closed.

And if the postman is reading I promise a big tip for Christmas :-)

:) Ah the good old christmas box for the postman!

My wipers arrived today tho so cant complain. Ordered the ones on the group buy.

Have to go to Walkinstown tomorro so thinkin of callin over to Otto in Terrinure to see if they have a throttle cable in stock. The one in it is a bit stiff. Any of you ever bought anythin from them they are supposed to be good.

Half thinkin of Takin out the charger in the next day or two and gettin it on the way. Are there any dos or donts with regard to takin out the charger?

Yeah cant go wrong with Otto. Have got a few bits of them in the past and cant complain. There is a handy guide on here to taking the charger off. Its straightforward enough and no real major headaches involved. Just a good soaking of WD-40 before and you will be alright.

Nowt clever about removing the charger. Just need a lot of different allen keys, mainly 6mm. I have bought several lengths to make access easier.

Remove the alternator.

If you take the pully off the charger first, you can get it out much easier. Other wise you'll need to remove the bracket off the engine.

I'll do a screen shot of the mounts in a minute.

Gavin

And take note of the lengths of the bolts, I know someone who $hagged a serviceable charger, using the wrong length in the wrong place.

Removing the headlight and the airbox will also give better access. When re-fitting dont go crazy on re-tightening. You dont want to damage any of the threads.

Search for 'charger' AND 'removal' will turn up some usful info.

Thats great h100vw thanks. I have found that its easier to ask first and learn from others mistakes when it comes to things like this.

Anway ill make a few calls tomorro and ill see what ill do from there.

@ strange one. Costs me the guts of 800 euro mate. But that included lots of porting and flowing and a new oil feed pipe plus carrige back. 26 quid for the pipe but well worth it cause the original ones are know to fail meaning no lubrication to the charger.
