New Engine?

Recommended Posts

Ok, being pondering the pro's and cons of getting a better VR6 or one that needs work but buying it for less. Those who read the thread will know what I'm prattling on about.

Another option which has just occoured to me was to buy a cheap 2.0 or 1.8 Corrado and wack a new engine in it. Can pick em up for a grand or so.

I asume a 2.8 VR engine or an R32 will go in these as well as the VR6, but do you need to replace the gearbox as well? Any ideas on full cost of a transplant for an R32 and VR6 2.8?

I'm basically wanting to buy a cheap 1.8/2.0 and then go to a specialist and say 'put this engine in here please!'. What do I have to be aware of with such a radical change to the car? I know a lot on here have used 1.8/2.0 donors.

Any difference between the 1.8 & 2.0 donor car I should be aware of?

Cheers guys!

I'm no expert but...

The valvers have different driveshafts, engine mounting points, hubs and track width to the VR.

Last I heard, R32 lumps were (if you could find them) going for £3k upwards, but you can get 24v VRs from a 4-Motion etc for less.

You'd almost certainly have to change the gearbox to a G60/VR6 one, but no idea about mounting it to the 24v engine or using the Golf 'box.

The 24v engines also use a completely different ECU/Clocks and loom, so you'd need to re-wire the engine bay.

At a very minimum. An older 12v VR6 is a slightly easier swap, but if you're going to all that effort, you might as well got the extra distance and put a 24v in.

Price wise for someone to do the transplant, I've heard £3k for just the labour to do a 20vT swap, so I'd guess at least that price for a 24v VR swap.

hasnt anyone tried to remap a VR6 ECU to run on a 24v?

its just out of interest save all the head ache of wiring it up and u might be able to get more power form it?
