VR Cutting out

Recommended Posts

Came to the car last week, It fired up first time then cut out after about 2 or 3 seconds, tried it over and over again with the same result!!! Its getting power to the fuel pump, fuses and the coil. any ideas?

Its got a vag/scorpion 5000 cat 1 alarm/imobiliser on it, thought that might be the problem but suerly it just wouldnt start if the imobiliser was nackered?

Any help would be greatfull!!

That sounds like the ECU immobiliser to me ... relies on the sensor coil in the steering column picking up the signal from the chip in the key.

Try a different key first...

Note this is distinct from the VAG/Scorpion 5000 alarm/immobiliser, and is built in to the ECU.

try putting you key further down the steering column, from memory the sensor coil thingy(tech term) is prone for slipping down the column and not being in range of the key

No! Just the coil in the steering column. Unfortunately that comes from VW as part of the "immobiliser kit", which includes the control box... The coil itself should cost no more than £10, but since they won't sell it on it's own ...

It may not be broken anyway, it may just have slipped out of place and need re-fixing.

How old is your VR? 95? If so, it'll have the factory immobiliser, which consists of the key, reader coil and transponder box. The scorpion alarm works independanly of the immobiliser. Yep the engine will start and then immediately stop if the immobiliser circuit is faulty. If you've got access to VAG-COM, you'll see this error "Engine blocked by immobiliser - faulty wiring and/or intermittant"

The reader coil usually goes first. The transponder rarely packs up. Try a new coil from VW, they're about £25 and clip around the ignition barrel.

Even cheaper, WD40 the three pin connection plug on the immobilser box, the plug that connects the coil cable out of the steering column. Known issue for all Oct'94 to June '95 C's plus all key immobilsed VWs 1995 - 97 unless modified with gold contacts.

If not that, check the coil reader is in position correctly around the ignition barrel, they have been know to "slip" so that the key chip cannot be read.

Problem solved, after all that it was as simple as fuse 16 being blown!!! No idea why it causes the car to cut out, as it only works the glove box light, part of the mfa and the active spoiler!!!

Maybe the alarm is using that Fuse 16 ignition 12 volt supply as part of it's battery & ignition feeds???

I had the exact same problem with my VR6 with factory immobiliser.

Tried starting it - fired perfectly - then cut out after 1/2 seconds.

It was fuse 16. Thank God for this forum - saved me time and money!
