Here's a new problem for ya'

Recommended Posts

I'm feeding my brother's cats for a week and the route I take to get there involves a roundabout and a turning. I go almost all the way around the roundabout (i.e. last exit) and then there's an immediate left turn.

Now I do the whole manuever in 2nd, no brakes required and twice in succession, the engine cut out (just after the left turn is completed). There's no warning, no strange noises, no lights on the dashboard, nothing, engine just cuts out...

With the car still moving, I turn the key and the car starts fine and away we go again...

Is it me, or is this a little bizarre? It's not done it before and it's only done it on this one manuever (i.e sharp turning to the right, follwed by sharp turn to the left) twice in one day...

Fuel's okay, levels look okay, although I know my oil could probably do with a top up.

Interesting to note was that my spolier was up when the engine cut, and after I restarted (and later stopped at a junction) the spoiler stayed up?!

Stopped at brother's, turned the engine off and still the spolier stayed up. Put it down using the button, and on the way back home confirmed all was still well with the activation.

I'm stumped on the cutting out thing, anyone throw me an idea or three?

Cheers,

DtM.

Hmmm... I would check the battery terminals and maybe give them a clean and reconnect them, also check the v belt etc...

...The spoiler module may have just got confused after the loss of power thinking the spoiler was down when it was in its up position.

I ve had this one DTM after a garage welded in a new battery tray for me he had attatched the the negative cable on the battery ok but just behind the battery the cable has a ring terminal that joins it to the chassis and he hadn't done that up properly which caused my car to do some really funny things, one being cutting out at really odd times check that this cable is nice and secure across the length of it and also check that the main positve cable is also secure as that could cause your problem as well if it doesn't have a great contact

check your earth straps DTM,as i've heard about a few C's "cutting" out like you've described and the fault has turned out to be poor earth straps

Wow, thanks for the responses people!

I can check the terminals tommorow (I popped the bonnet before I posted to see if anything looked amiss) and one of the terminals did look covered in something...

...and it's remove the -ve first, then the +ve, right? I also assume the ECU can survive being disconnected for a couple of mins...?

In the meantime, can someone explain where the earth straps are?

I figured it was probably something loose (I've lost three gears before now due to a loose nut), and the tight left turn also has a bump in it I think, so it's probably just shaken something out of contact.

Thanks again for your help!

If you open the bonnet and stand looking at the engine, the earth strap is usually an inch or so wise piece of flat plastic coated cable bolted between the bonnet and the engine bay somewhere near the right hand bonnet lifter / hinge thing.

Mine had actually rusted loose at one of the ends and I replaced it.. cost about £8 though.. good old stealer prices!

jims16v....although that one on the bonnet is an earth strap..it not the problem area

look at you battery..follow the lead from the - terminal ...it should bolt to the inner wing then follow on to the gearbox...unbolt it and sandpaper/wire brush it till its really clean the bolt it up tight and wipe some grease over it

my g60 had poor wiring...i purchased some 4guage wire from the local stereo shop..i replaced the batt +&- and the alt to starter i also made a extra eatrh lead form the block to the alt...for the sake of £20 it made a big differance,i picked up an extra 1 volt at the battery and it starts quicker

maybe worth a go if you can solder fat wire( need a butane torch)

This happened to my car on a fast LH, which was a very bumpy road, same thing, cut out, car still rolling, turned ign of then restarted. My solution was to slow down a bit on that stretch of road  . Asked the VAG specialist they said it might be a relay bouncing :? Has not happened again. Touch wood. Know what to check next time.

Cheers guy
