Buying a VR6 - what do I need to know?

Recommended Posts

Hi

hopefully looking at a Dec95 (N) VR6 @ the weekend. 137k 2 owners (the current one for 8 years) with full history (VAG & specialist) & all paperwork incl MOT certificates. Current MOT to 2006 and car has recently been serviced. Tracker security device fitted, Sony 10 CD stacker, green

What do you recon, up for 4k?

Any help, thoughts appreciated. I am going to print of the buying guide (good info here :thumb: ) .

cheers Simon

Well glad you found the buyers guide.. was just about to point you at that ;)

Car sounds quite nice but i'd definately haggle on the selling price - VR's just are NOT selling very well at the moment for some reason, and certainly given the current prices, thats fairly high.. i'd be at least hoping for leather or no obvious faults at all..

Simon, firstly where are you based? You may find someone willing to pop along to check it out with you if required?

Price sounds ok if its as it sounds.

Last owner 8 yrs is a good selling point in my book. If I had a pund for every one i phone that said yeah mate, had it nearly 2 months, cant afford the insurance, yeah, like they didnt check that first, beard!

Suspect this is all in the buyers guide but if not, the biggies imo..............

No 1 in my book is very carefull bodywork checks for accident damage, mechanicals are easier to replace that trying to get panels done properly imo.

No 2, the mileage would'nt put me off 1 jot, but i'd be asking if its had

Timing Chains

Head Gasket

Clutch

Possible head rebuild.

If they dont know about the chains, hold it at around 1200 rpm as thats where they tend to be noisiest!

If you can get it nice and hot and coast down a long hill on prolonged in gear overun and check for smoke out the ariss. Not the end of the world but all good barg points.

Dont know what your in at the mo but check the MFA oil temp and water temps

should be 90ish and 108-118 respectively depending on speed etc. They do run hot, just make sure they settle down and dont keep climbing.

Sorry if you know all this but hey, no harm in mentioning. :D

some great advise here chaps, thanks a lot :D . Spoke to the guy today & he seems genuine. Had it 8 years, loves it but needs must & all that so he has to sell it. Nick, thanks, will ask re above & do the checks whilst driving it. Mileage I am happy with as it has full service history to prove it & has been used on long haul Motorways for most of its life.

the car is in West London, 15 mins from Heathrow so hoping to look Sat.

Might be looking at this car at the same time.

This chap has only had a short while thou & is selling as to small / needs 4 doors. Asking myself why he brought it tbh? Has leather thou but not the bee all & end all.

Do any have Air con btw?

cheers so far :thumb: Simon

Air con was an option but it seems that not many people ticked the box when ordering their Corrado's. Its definately a fairly rare / uncommon option.

Hi Simon

Just to let you know I have already viewed this car over two months ago so it obiviously isn't selling. It has quite a nasty scrape on the rear quater and the wheels are in need of a refurb. The bloke seems genuine but the body is not in the best of nick.

Also the rear disks were very dirty compared to the fronts so it looks to me as if they are not clamping.

Sorry to put you off but just thought i'd let you know.

"Good condition" is the most abused term ever when it comes to selling cars.

They lie on the advert in the hope that people won't notice the sheddy bits when they arrive.....or just get punters in with good ads and haggle on the day. Most people buy cars with their hearts rather than their heads.....otherwise we'd all be Daewoos.
