fubar'd my steering?

Recommended Posts

Ok , my steering has gone off whack - the steering wheel is rotated to the left when going in a straight line.

It has had a new offside ball joint done recently as well as the caliper taking a few hammer whacks trying to get the caliper carrier off.

So is the ' geometry' out? and what caused it?

Should the guy who did the ball joint have done the alignment after the job?

Or did I knock something out whilst trying to get the caliper off?

More importantly what do I do next? Is it OK to drive? I can't hear any funny noises or anything.....

Is the car lowered?

I think the alignment should be ok, but if you've had the ball joint off, the camber could be out.

And you'd have to hit the caliper really hard to knock out the alignment, so i wouldn't worry about that.

I'd just take it easy and get down to a place where you can have your tracking and camber tested when you can.

cheers g60dave, no the car is still on stilts :-)

would the camber affect the position of the steering wheel though?

Might do if it was really out.

But if you intend to slam it, you gotta get the camber done anyway.

If the camber goes way out on one side then the steering will "settle" to a different centre, so you'll probably find it drifts massively unless you hold the wheel over to correct it.
