Going to look at a MK4 golf 2moro, Is there anything worth looking out for??

I would imagine you'd be looking out for similar things to a Rado, what type is it?

I don't have long to post but I guess it varies on what engine its running!

 

Trying to think of some things to look out for off the top of my head:

 

* Dont let mileage put you off! MK4's gobble the miles up!

* Check cambelt interval on them.. cambelt job is pricey as waterpump needs doing too (as i'm finding out - mines due next Friday)

* Creaking / groaning from the rear taking speed bumps or corners is rear axle bushes.. about £300 to put right.. but incredibly common on the MK4's

* Depending on the age of the car, check to see if the window regulator problem has reared its head and been taken care of. Think it doesn't happen to 2002 and on cars? Not sure on that one..?

 

I can really reccomend the MK4 TDI PD's.. mine has been superb so far even with 116k on the clock. Admittedly this major service is going to be pricey but all its cost me in one year of motoring has been a new clutch pedal (£17) as the old one snapped! :)

From all the issues my mate had with his MK4 GTI :-

 

Snapped bonnet release handle (in the glovebox)

 

Knocking over bumps at the front - ARB bushes

 

Knocking over bumps at the rear - top mounts

 

Windows dropping into the door - snapped plastic guides (VW replacements are now metal and very easy to replace).

 

Paint wearing off the window switch panel

 

Slow and juddery wipers - corroded motor terminals

 

Repetitive AC panel back light blowing - unknown cause.

 

Etc!

 

They're solid cars by and large, no issues of major concern, apart from the windows which is obviously a security risk.
