suspension?

hey there,

 

U will never believe this but iv just figured out that the rear end has a nasty habit of swinging out.

 

I just pranged my G60 up a kerb, f***ed the alloy & tyre, probably the suspension and god knows what other damage.

 

I am GUTTED!!!!!! My bloody pride and joy.

 

Has anyone done this before and what is the worst case scenario with regards to repair and cost.

Sorry to hear that. I had a couple of dodgy moments in my old 16v but thankfully never done any damage. :shock:

 

I take it you drove home with the spare on, how was the car driving then? Any pulling to one side or anything like that? Corrados are tough cars and alloys can be relatively soft so hopefully the wheel took the brunt of the damage.

Worst case scenario, u could need a whole new rear axle assembley and dunno what else.

 

Another thing to consider is why did the rear end swing out so easily? If it was wet then it can happen but it looks dry out there to me so could be s*** tyres or worn bushes/shockers something along them lines.

I wrote off my old 16V C 'cos of the back end swinging out as you describe... :cry:

 

I'd noticed that the rear was getting a bit "light" feeling over the previous couple of weeks and then I hit a little bit of diesel on a damp corner and that was it, off I went... :shock:

 

The only reason that my C was written off was due to the fact I twisted the body shell and put a slight crease in the roof... They're remarkably strong cars and, as long as you get it all checked out, you'll probably be OK. I took out a 6" thick oak gatepost complete with 2 feet of concrete when I crashed mine and it only put a slight dent in the sill! :shock:

 

Check to see if you've got matched tyres on your C, (same make, same model) as I found that this can make the rear go light if the front has better tyres than the rear, also check out your rear shocks/springs and have a look at the rear bushes which hold the axle to the car as these can perish and go soft which would cause the rear to go light.....

 

As Joe M says, best case is that you can get the wheel sorted out and there's no other damage. Worst case is rear axle, but don't get too dis-heartened yet as they're becoming more and more available cheaply and if you need to change the bushes then it'll be coming off anyway, so there'll be very little extra labour involved in swapping the two over if needed... :? 8)

 

Hope it all goes well for you and you get your car back on the road ASAP with as little cost as possible! 8)

This Happened to me also when approaching round-a bout and touched the brakes and off she went.since I've lowered my C the rear brake compensator had not been adjusted to suit ....so their was far to much rear brakes and that's what made the rear end come loose.

 

This is common fault on a C when giving it some grief approaching a long corner ,when you want to scrub off speed touch the brake it goes worse !!,hit more brakes and off she goes.. :x

So all to you Corrado owners that have lowered their suspension...you all should adjusted the rear brake bias adjuster to stop the back end from drifting out.

Cheers guys

 

i had to drive back up the road with the busted alloy. the locking nut wont come off. its going into the garage to get checked in the morning.

 

it pulls to the right and makes bizarre noises when braking. it does still drive relatively ok but not sure what damage iv done. iv definitely dome damage of some sort.

 

hopefully it will just be the alloy that took the brunt of it.

 

ill let you know how it goes.

i swung the ass out on my C on ice/snow the first winter i had it (only moving it to a new storage location) i turned it sideways around a bend on a two-lane road with curbs on either side... managed countersteer back straight but without much room to play with the right side climbed a curb......but a little pile of snow acted as a perfect ramp and a small soft snowbank stopped the car about 3 feet before a pole. no damage at all. phew.

It's not too bad (so I've heard) what he has done. Gonna cost him about £200 to get it put right and it's getting done on Wednesday. He's learned the hard way the limits the car has in the wet and was very lucky not to wreck the car (or himself) in the process. Don't think you'll be doing that again in a hurry eh matey :p

Alot of the problem is most of the weight in Corrados is over the front wheels therefore braking too hard when going into a cornering especially in the damp / wet conditions we get will let the rear end go light and start sliding - its even worse in the VR6!!!

Sorry folks,

 

Meant to post what happened in the end.

 

It cost me Approx £193 for parts and labour (my mate is a mechanic and gets parts at trade price).

 

I had to get the right suspension arm and cv joint replaced. Also had to get the steering column corrected. I also had a coolant leak and another few minor problems that were nothing to do with the bump. These were also sorted at the same time which was included in the above price.
