Are these problems linked?

Recommended Posts

My G60 went through its last battery in a year. I have replaced it recently but the other day in heavy traffic the water temp got very hot, the low water level light flashed and after stopping, the battery was dead!

I checked the expansion tank but the level was fine.

Until this incident the battey has been fine.

I also noticed that the fan was not running at any time. Checked the fuses (all ok in the main fuse box).

Sometimes I can hear the fuel pump running some time after locking the car?

Any ideas?

Thanking you in anticipation!

Tony

Welcome to the forum - some BIG writting you got there!

Fuel pump and fan should run on after stopping - thats ok as long as it's not doing it for ages...

Sounds like you have a short somewhere that is draining the battery but it could be a coincidence - have a word with an autoelectrician and mention the water light too...

OK, just got it back from the garage, had it serviced at the same time. The draining battery fault was down to the electric window relay! Its locacted behind the trim on the rear offside (where your right elbow would be if you sat in the rear offside seat). It had developed a fault and was shorting out causing the flat batteries.

Is that window relay in the smae place in all raddo's? Mines a 90 G60 and the past week the battery has been drained in a matter of hours every time I shut the car off. Also, could it still happen if the window motors arent connected, mine havent worked since I got the car(the one from the driver door is missing), and I haven got a chance to put the new ones in yet.

I dont know where the relay would be in your car but logic would suggest the same place. My windows were both working well during this fault. The mechanic said the connector into the relay was shorting, draining my battery like yours. (The largest of the 3 plugs going into the relay.)

Disconnecting this plug stopped my windows working but fixed the battery fault while I was waiting for the replacement relay. You could try disconnecting these plugs and see if it is the problem? :)

Having now fitted a replacement relay I have noticed the battery returning to full strength, a problem with my radiator fan not running has disappeared and the passenger window goes all the way down with one touch of the switch!

I have no idea if these were connected but as long as it remains that way, I wont loose any sleep.
