Interesting Insurance Loophole with Churchill...

My Golf is (was) insured with Churchill and now i've got a Corrado lined up i've began the process of phoning around and trying to get quotes for a modified car!

 

I spoke to Brentacre/Adrian Flux and got reasonable quotes (though more than I was expecting TBH) and then thought I best phone up Churchill and cancel my current policy expecting them not to be able to compete with modified specialists.

 

I talked to a guy who just happened to be a bit of a car enthusiast and we got to the KR cams in the valver i'm thinking of buying and he got a bit stumped and said that he couldn't find anything in the system for them so he'd have to talk to the 'technical advice' team.. was put on hold, short delay, and he got back to me and said that he had some good news - suspension and air filter stuff I would be charged for, but as there was nothing on the system for different cams, they basically won't charge me anything for them despite the power increase!

 

So there you go - got a fairly decent price off them and it looks like I will be staying with them (though there is a fairly horrific excess in the event of a smash) - but if you're going to be modding your car with new cams then Churchill is the way to go! ;)

To be honest, I don't think I'd mention a KR cam to an insurance company. The chances of it ever being a problem in the event of an accident are so small I just couldn't be arsed with the grief of mentioning it. Obviously, in your case, it was worthwhile letting them know as you're covered, if the worst happens, for free.

See that is something i always thought.

 

Problem is that some people that have worked in insurance say that they are very keen to give the engine a once over with a spanner looking for mods.

 

Anyone any opinions on this ?

That it would take a seriously keen eye and perhaps a micrometer to see that KR cams had been fitted.......also the huge amount of effort of removing all of the inlet manifold and cam cover...why would they bother

Yeah - I'd think they're more likely to find out about it by reading an internet forum!

 

Was there not someone who got caught with that one a while ago?

 

I would always give HIC a go for a modded car, theyre pretty good.

Maybe, but it would still be a case of the company being bothered to follow it through and actually strip down the persons engine bay.

To be honest I would expect most assessors to look at your car after a crash and unless it is really obviously modded they probably would not even notice a set of 280's on a valver.

i would be concerned with the coment from the company they dont have cams

listed as a modification. I would want proof that they are aware of the modification. At the end of the day if an insurance company engineer want's to inspect any part of the car he can. so just for peace of mind i would make sure it's disclosed. why give an insurance company a chance to kick you claim out. stick with brentacre or flux they no modified cars!!!!!!!!!!

Yes but on my policy they would have cost me £500 + more over my current cover, but thats off the point...

If the company openly admit that they don't have cams as a modification just get the guy to send you an e-mail stating that they are aware of the the mod.

I represent churchill at work and know that all calls are recorded.

 

In this example, the modification was disclosed. The advisor was happy that there would be no additional loading on the premium. But.........

 

If they indicate that the mod wont appear on your documents, one way to protect yourself from future disputes is to simply record the time/date of the conversation and the name of the advisor.

 

This way, you can refer them to the conversation if there is ever a problem and they can listen to the call themselves to confirm you did tell them.
