Amplifier recommendations needed please!

I've been running the same system for about 12 years now and my Amp has finally started to die. Trouble is, I'm now completely out of touch with regards to the ICE scene!

 

I have a Pioneer Minidisc headunit and multi-changer, a set of JL 5.25" 2 way components up front, and a series one dual voice coil 2 Ohm JL 12W6 sub. This was being powered by a Denon DCA-800 amp. The amp was never really enough for the sub, but did pretty well to power it all for so long. It's finally dying though so now its time to replace it!

 

I'm not sure what to buy next though. My budget isn't huge (£2-300), and ideally I'm looking for another multi-channel amp as I love their versitality. However I'm not totallay objectionable to a multi-amp set up.

 

What amp would anyone suggest though, bearing in mind I really want to get the best out of my sub? I know that JL and PG amps are a firm favourite but what about any other makes? I'm considering the PG R8.0:4 Octane amp?... does anybody have an experience in running a W6 sub from one of these amps? (Shame it seems that PG seems to be suffering as a company - http://portland.bizjournals.com/portland/stories/2006/06/05/story6.html)

Hello dredgey, just fitted a system with two Jl subs, and a set of jl Vr components. I used the Exile amplifiers, these are produced by the same people who design Pheonix Gold amplifiers. At the moment they can be sourced quite cheaply brilliant power delivery, excellent build quality and crystal clear sound for the money. Speak to Billy at Bornemouth Car Hifi, and say timmy from Weymouth put you in touch. Im sure he will do you a deal.

Genesis Profile 4 is £300, has 4 channels rated at a minimum of 50W rms each, but that's a Genesis 50W, so it's actually more like 100W rms.

I'm gonna be mostly getting either one of them, or the Profile 4 Ultra which is identical, but double the power and £400.

Ive just fitted a genesis profile 5 and the quality is superb. The seperate sub channel is rated at 250 rms, but kicks a hell off a lot more than my old 250 mono.

Excellent! Thanks for your replies guys. Funnily enough, that's the second recommendation for that amp that I've had - although it was from someone who was trying to sell me one so I wasn't sure if he was recommending it on that basis.

 

I will probably go for the Genesis as it seems to come highly commended, but out of curosity, how does it compare to the PG R8.0:4 Octane amp?

Mr. Haywire seems to buy his ICE regardless of cost, so if he's going for a Genesis, then I'd guess it's the one to have :lol:

Unless you go for their top end ones, Phoenix Gold aren't what they used to be but it's your money and choice at the end of the day. We can only suggest what we've tried and liked and Genesis seem to tick all the boxes, which is why I use them :-)

My missus doesn't have the same spending power as Wire, looking for a decent 4 channel amp for £100-120, do you reckon 2nd hand is best, or a new cheapie?

The genesis will kick the others into next week, both in terms of sound quality and build quality. Having said that, i dont think a profile 4 has the power to do teh JL justice, but will be prefect for your components.

 

Is also worth looking second hand at something like http://www.talkaudio.co.uk There are some "old skool" beauties going for sale all the time, such as my Phoenix Gold MS2250 i just picked up for £250, that can easily put out well over 1000Watts RMS into subs...... Dont think you have to buy brand new.
