You haven't mentioned what engine you have, but it sounds to me like the temperature sensor that cuts the radiator fan in isn't working properly and consequently your coolant is boiling over.

Before you go fitting a new stat might be worth replacing the bottle lid I had a similar problem with my 16V and it turned out to be a worn o ring on the cap.

 

It can happen from overfilling the water.

Feel the radiator / use a ir termometer if you have one after running the engine for a while. If it's cold to the touch, replace the thermostat, otherwise not. If the fan never goes on, check for a faulty thermoswitch by shorting the outer pins on the connector. The connector is on the lower left of the radiator. The fan should go on by doing this, if so replace the thermoswitch. Keep in mind that the thermoswitch won't kick in if the radiator doesn't get hot.

 

You should check the gasket on the expansion tank cap though, it should really never surge up.

if the bottom hose is only warmish and its overheating i whould change the thermostat first, sounds like its not fully opening

Sounds like you have sorted the problem then or if not at least found the problem....
