Droning/humming noise

Recommended Posts

Done a search...still unsure....

I have been experiencing a humming/droning noise from what appears to be the rear of my VR6, it gets louder above about 30mph increasing with speed to the point it drowns out the engine and the induction noise of my BMC CDA!!!!! The noise remains when I dip the clutch at speed as well. I think it may be the wheel bearings but there is no play in the rear wheels, there is a slight noise when rotating the wheels by hand on both sides when up on jacks......

Any advice, and price of repairs at a stealer/specialist would be gratefully accepted, being as its booked into Stealth end of the month to get the suspension done, more expense is going to hurt??????

Just a suggestion before you go changing mechanical stuff - as an experiment, rotate you tyres front to rear. You may find that the noise disappears.

I've had this same symptom twice in 8 years on VW VR6's & it was the tyre going out of round both times. They wear so little on the rear that they tend to get old before they wear out.

Rear bearings aren't expensive anyway, if it does turn out to be them.

Thanks for the suggestion but, I was gettin the noise a little with my old speedlines on, with newish tyres, recently changed to new alloys and tyres, the noise seems to have been getting progressively worse with both the speedlines and the new Azevs on the car. Just wasn't quite as loud at first, thought it was the exhaust, but had that checked out and realigned the other day. Visually inspected the hubs when the new wheels were fitted no sign of anything untoward, brakes rubbing etc.....

How hard and what sort of kit do I need to do the rear bearing, cos I work away from home for long periods, got the car with me but only minimal tools, hence the stealer/specialist question?????

I'd guess you changed to bigger wheels and tyres from the speedlines?

I would think it's your wheel bearings on the way out. The change to bigger wheels puts extra strain on the bearings (already on the way out) and they get worse far quicker.

double-6s you hit the nail on the head, went from the standard 15x6.5 up to 17x8s, look sweet, shame about the performance lost but the increase in traction it spectacular!!!

Ohh well, off to the stealer, he'll be waiting with a mask and pistol again!!!!

:brickwall: :( Flippin VR, only one choice in life a VR or money in you wallet.......VR wins every time!

Shouldn't cost that much for the rear bearings to be changed, they're easy to fit and are about £10 each from the stealers

(Oh and incase you didn't already know, make sure you get the SKF bearings from VAG, avoid GSF bearings like the plague, they're notoriously sh!t)

Took the C down to the stealer today, took it in and as suspected the rear passenger bearing was shot......

Went to collect it and OMG £160

Before you ask thats ONE bearing and diagnostic and fitting time!!!!! What a bargan, NOT!! They should be behind that service desk with a mask and gun!!!

Blimey!! you really need to find a good independent garage.... I did the rears on mine a couple of months ago & they were dead easy to do! They should have really done both as its quite likely that they will fail around the same time.

I was charged around £170 for a service that ended up basically being an oil change! Its a shame really as it has full dealer history, but its just not worth keeping it up.

Tell me about it! Mine has a full stealer history as well, dunno that it will continue..

I would have given it a shot myself, but I am working away from home, not got much in the way of tools with me! :(

I still get mine dealer serviced..........approx £120-ish per year..........but i get either my mate or local garages to do other bits n pieces............only use the stealer if there wasn't any other alternative

Actually i've just remembered... getting the carrier hex bolts off was a complete nightmare - eneded up rounding one off and having to angle grinding it!

£120 is not too bad - i'll try and get a fixed quote for the service first. I'd like to keep up the history, it only has 64k so may be worth it.
