My drivers one is one up when the ignition is on, but the passengers is only hold down up.

Sounds like a ignition switch problem.

it's an age thing....

Early ones are auto down on both sides and auto up on the drivers side

Later ones are only auto down, you have to hold the button to put the window back up... It's something to do with a safety regulation to stop kids beheading themselves in the windows accidentally...

Mine too is a '94 :?

Maybe a window control box from a slightly earlier late one will sort you out?

try this, push down the button and hold down the button for ten seconds,do this up and down on both sides with the ignition on. it works on most cars, not sure on VAG

...are you suggesting this activates auto down/up?

...or that we're lazy gits and should just hold the button down to open/shut windows......
