double-6s 0 Posted September 8, 2006 Hi I was just wondering how much all the necessary gubbins would cost for a 4 wheel drive conversion (excluding labour). Approximately. And would it be cheaper to get hold of syncro or haldex running gear? Cheers
CoxyLaad 0 Posted September 8, 2006 haldex would probablies be more available now, but you will most certainly need a syncro rear beam - unless you are really into your fabrication. You best bet would be to buy an old golf syncro. but then you will have to have the box bell housings swapped to fit a VR. In summary, its a lot of work which ever way you go, but worth it in the long run :D
double-6s 0 Posted September 8, 2006 Cheers mate. So are there any syncros still around? Sorry I am dumb - are we talking Mk2? Can you get a boggo 1.6 syncro or something?
big_chris1981 0 Posted September 8, 2006 mk2 syncro is a 5 door 1.8 carb as base spec in this country mate.... rough ones that are suitbale for breaking seem to go for between £250 and £500...but they didnt sell that many over here in the first place. other option would be to buy a mk3 vr6 syncro to break.....but you'll still need some parts from the mk2 golf. would be safe to say that its a bit of a mission...and not cheap. big_chris1981 0 Posted September 9, 2006 whats even worse is when you have both setups sitting there on the floor infront of you...and a selection of engines :|

PhatVR6 0 Posted September 9, 2006 DO NOT BUY A GOLF OR JETTA SYNCRO!! 99% of the parts will be useless to you, and apart from the fuel tank, most of them will be rotten too.
cata 0 Posted September 9, 2006 would it work to get the dutchdub setup, plus find a syncro and get the floorpan and tank and then replace the components with the haldex ones? although i'm sure there are quite a few bits i don't know about sorry but i'm day dreaming x
big_chris1981 0 Posted September 9, 2006 what would you recomend then phat? mk3 vr6 syncro?
PhatVR6 0 Posted September 9, 2006 haldex is the way you need a sycnro rear beam, vr6 syncro rear arms if you're on 5 stud. vr6 sycnro box and the correct transfer box off a skoda octavia elegance 4x4 to run the haldex http://www.dutchdub.com makes and sells everything you'll ever need. corrado already has the big tunnel, you don't HAVE to fit a rallye rear floor, check out coxylaads thread it's not a dream, it's a realistic possibillity, and many peopl ehave done it themselves in their own garage, with no experience whatsoever.
