dtjames 0 Posted October 6, 2003 Hmmm - here goes... 1 HT leads - can they be bought individually...or do I have to buy a FULL set of 6? 2 Local garage changing wishbones - bolts snapped BOTH sides - is this common or should I go mental with them? 3 How long should it take to fit a new starter motor (experienced fitter ) ? I hate MOTs "£200 sir - oh yes, I forgot, yours was tha Corrado - I'll add the 1 now £1,200 please (- +VAT and G&T) ?? Lol :?
vr6storm 0 Posted October 6, 2003 ok as i've metioned previously you can but the full set of 6 quantum-branded(VW's own make btw) for approx £60 or they will sell 1 lead at approx £17 so as the other leads are likely to be as old as the one you are replacing you are as well replacing all 6 at the same time not sure about the wishbones tbh and as for starter motor i would imagine approx 1 hour at most for removal and refitting........... dtjames 0 Posted October 6, 2003 Bloody garage claim that they "couldn't get a single HT lead" !!! Sounds like crap to me too ! I'll get one for them tomorrow - thank God for Motorcycles eh?
stevemac 0 Posted October 6, 2003 Although it is possible to use the old ones, wishbone bolts should always be renewed when the wishbones are replaced. For the minimal extra cost, it's an item which I automatically replace - regardless of the condition of the original bolts. It's called "good customer service" - unhappy custmers can give a garage a bad reputation. No idea on the starter - I've never changed one on a VR6. woody 0 Posted October 7, 2003 I have had the wishbones changed recenlty on my G60. Wishbones cost £37 each from steeler and because i have had bolts snap on the car before bought every bolt which might have been required. As it was three of the bolts did snap so i was glad i did buy them. About two hours to change a starter on a G60 providing that bolts dont shear, but because they are quite long they do every know and again. m8 this garage sounds well dodgy if they cant source HT leads, have they ever seen a Corrado before? dtjames 0 Posted October 7, 2003 It's not that they can't source them - it's that they cannot buy them individually... ...is this unusual?
Linus Van Pelt 0 Posted October 7, 2003 ...or if you're really lucky (like me), the bolt shears and then you run the risk of having to replace the front subframe  ...thankfully, mr mechanic (thank you sir), managed to get it off without having to change the subframe... 8) but I'm sure there was some welding involved afterwards... ...and relax. Sy_VW 0 Posted October 7, 2003 I am about to be changing my starter motor when I get the spare one back from being refurbished. I wasn't expecting it to be a difficult/time consuming job. How comes it takes between 1-2 hours?? To be honest I haven't looked into whats involved, how difficult is it and what should I be aware of? Cheers

Henny 0 Posted October 7, 2003 YAY! 500 posts!!! :D 8) Sorry, just had to do that...   Was it an easy job or did you come across any difficulties? I remember swearing lots about the metal water pipe that runs along the top of the gearbox/front of the engine getting in the way, and getting the bolts back in afterwards was a bit of a swine 'cos they screw into part of the engine mount... IIRC I had to undo the big bolt in the top of the front engine mount so that it'd move, and then jack the gearbox up a bit to get the bolts to bite into the threads... It's a bit blurry on how I did it 'cos it was a while ago, and I've had the engine in LOTS of bits LOTS of times since then and can never remember which bit was hard to do...  I think that my memory is going with age... It's probably a safety measure so I don't add up the amount I've spent on the car and have a heart attack! :? I'll have a look at the car when I get home to jog my memory and put up a quick how to if I can remember how to do it... 8)
Kevin Bacon 5 Posted October 7, 2003 It's not that they can't source them - it's that they cannot buy them individually... ...is this unusual? As Roddy has already said, the original Beru ones can be bought for £17 each!!!! Which wishbone bolts did they snap? The rear ones or the front ones? I've never seen either snap. The most common problem is misalignment of the rear bolts which cross threads the captive nuts welded to the floor pan. They're easy to get to (large grommets under the carpet) and replace. Just make sure they use plenty of copper grease when refitting the new ones. Kev
