Andy T 0 Posted October 8, 2003 My G60 had a new set of front springs before I bought it, it had failed the MOT because they had sagged/broken. The front end now looks sky high compared to the back, and I've noticed the camber looks wrong. I measured the camber with a spirit level, it is actually positive by a few degrees! Obviously I need to get the wheel alighment done, but I'm reluctant to pay 45+VAT, only to have to pay it again when I get a lowering kit fitted in the next weeks. Can I just adjust the camber to 0° using the spirit level as a temporary method? Is it just a case of slackening the strut adjustment bolts, or does anything else have to be loosened/adjusted? thanks,
Kevin Bacon 5 Posted October 8, 2003 Spirit levels aren't accurate enough as your eye cannot detect fractions of a degree using an air bubble trapped in fluid! If you fancy a play though, you adjust the camber by undoing the lower ball joint bolts (x3) and sliding the strut in or out and then retighten the bolts once the new position has been set. If you don't fancy that, H&R sell camber bolts which makes life a litte easier. Kev
Andy T 0 Posted October 8, 2003 lol, I know it wouldn't be accurate, just better than what its set at now! If I have to undo the ball joints aswell, I won't bother, as I don't have a splitter. I can't really drive the car 'properly' when its like this, guess i'll have to bite he bullet and get it done.
chuck 0 Posted October 8, 2003 yea, once you adjust the camber, the tracking will also be out. Might as well bite the bullet and get it sorted properly. You could try it all yourself, but it will be a huge hassle, and you'll never get it perfect. BTW, if its riding higher at the front than the rear, its posible the rears might have sagged over time too - might be worth changing them too... Kevin Bacon 5 Posted October 8, 2003 Don't need a splitter dude! Just slackening the BJ bolts is all that's required. Try doing the camber by eye! That's this week's challenge! Your bumpstops at the rear could be shafted which is the normal cause for saggy arses, on cars that is  Common to misconception, the rear bumpstops are actually spring assistors and the car rides on them permanently. Do not chop too much off them when lowering, just snip the lowered amount off, say 1.5" if that's you're lowering drop. Kev
chuck 0 Posted October 8, 2003 Is it not easier to adjust camber using the 2 strut to wheel-bearing-housing bolts, as the housing has a slotted hole and loads of play. Thats the way I did it anyway. Can't see the BJ bolts making big differences in the camber. I believe there's a difference in the front suspension between the 16v/G60 and the VR6 setup? You don't want 0 deg camber. Factory says about -0.5 deg, but most people here run closer to -1 deg, drastically improves cornering.
MikeVR6 0 Posted October 8, 2003 £45 + VAT for wheel alignment! You're havin' a bubble ain't ya!? The tyre place I use does a full four wheel laser alignment for £16. And I thought that was steep

And I thought that was steep  my local tyre company do wheel alignment for about £20...........but its not the same as a 4-wheel geometry set-up i get done by star-performance for £40+ vat

Andy T 0 Posted October 9, 2003 Try doing the camber by eye! That's this week's challenge! Kev haha, I'm an engineer, we've got some very accurate spirit levels at work!! seriously tho, i'm not going to touch it myself. So -0.5° camber is the standard setting for the C, same as the mk2 then. I'll check the rear spring assistors, they probably are disintegrated. That's Awesome GTI store's price of 45+VAT. My local VAG specialist charges 40+VAT, basically it's an hour's labour, and it does take them that long to get it spot on, sometimes longer. I might start looking at suspension kits, and get it all done at the same time, sooner rather than later. btw, I have a pair of new Bilstein GAS mk2 16v rear shocks in the garage, would these fit the C G60? cheers,
