zyclamvw 0 Posted December 3, 2006 Hi people My lovely '96 vr6 auto has taken a liking to running at 100 degrees. It was recently in at a specialist vw garage, where it had the electric cylinder head water pump, the main water pump, and a leaking gasket at the rear of the engine was replaced, but it still runs closer to 100 than 90! On the open road it is fine untill there is any kind of traffic then its up to 100. obviously its using water, and it can't be good for it to be that hot, but the garage prettymuch said 'we've done all we can!' ......nice anyone got any ideas? the electric fan is working fine, and there are no obvious leaks. someone has suggested the thermostat, and i wondered if the box could be causing greif, but i was wondering if there was something that has happened to someone else ta :roll: Quote Share this post Link to post Share on other sites

ZippyVR6 0 Posted December 4, 2006 zyclamvw, first of all do you mean oil or water temp? The fact that you have a close formation V shaped engine sat in a tight bay with little air circulation means that it does get hot. Its not to much to wory about. If you use the search and look for "vr6 and engine and temp" you will find many other concerns similar to yours. The oil does get hot and will get to 120 degrees without too much provoking but it says in the handbook that you only need to be concerned if you get to 140. Having said that many people on here have stuck an aditional oil cooler on the car to help cool the engine. gogsboy 0 Posted December 11, 2006 What does most VR6's sit at when your stuck in traffic then? Also how long does the fan stay on for after you park up. dr_mat 0 Posted December 11, 2006 If you're sitting in traffic a VR will sit at 100 degrees. If it goes OVER then you have a problem. The fans should come on at 92. If they don't then there's a problem, but even so it's not unusual to see 100 degrees if there's no air flow through the rad. In fact you really need ~30+ mph to prevent it from sitting at 100 deg. The fan stays on after parking up for as long as it takes for the water in the block to cool slightly. Which depends on how hot it was. And how hot the block was. The after-run circuit uses a different temp sensor compared to the ignition-on fan control circuit, so yes, it's normal for it to have a different state if you put the key in. Joniboy 0 Posted December 11, 2006 As Dr_mat says, VRs will always shoot up to 100 deg in traffic, mine does it all the time! As long as it cools down when the fan kicks in or when you start to cruise along, then there really isn't a problem. My only thought on 'it not doing it 6 months ago' is did the garage put in a new thermostat? If the previous one was stuck open or not present, then the chances are the water temp would take a good while to get up to temp. Just a thought as this was the case with my mates Rado. Car is fine when travelling but in traffic does get hot. Need a cure to get the first fan to kick in. Sorry guys, i know this has been on a million times but ive never found a concrete answer.
