Hi everyone. Glad you have found you guys!!

 

I've been suffering from 'Corrado love' recently and thinking about maybe taking the plunge early next year. I currently drive a 79 MK1 Golf GTI which I love and I don't really want to get rid of her. I've spent a bit of money on her this year and I'm gonna be moving house soon.....so I'm thinking I need something semi-sensible.

 

I've been mainly thinking about the 1800 16v, followed by the 2000 16v or the G60.I'm sure someone mentioned to me that the 1800 16v has quicker acceleration than the G60 and the 2000 16v? Is this right?? I would obviously love the VR6, but I'm thinking the general running costs (Petrol, Insurance etc) are a lot higher than the other models?????

 

Basically I want a nice standard model, with Decent performance that's not gonna be a money pit.....what's my best option??

Don't rush in to buying the first one you see. The G60 I've just sold cost me the grand total of two tyres, set of discs and set of pads in 45,000 miles.

they're all decent motors with their own faults and merits,like Andy has said don't rush into buying one,these days condition(mechanical/body/interior) is more important than age/miles

I didn't believe it and thought that it can't be right, But I've seen in a couple of places on the net that the 0-60 time is quicker for the 1.8 16v than the G60 the 2.0 16V (I take it this because of the Cat??)

 

I'm not overly bothered about speed as I'm no boy racer, but I've always liked something with a bit of poke and if the 1800 is about the same pace as the g60 and I don't have to worry about any expensive supercharger work, then I rather take that route.

the figs you see on the net tho were a car mags figs IIRC VW state the G60 does 0-60 in 7.3secs and 8.9secs for the 1.8 16v...........VR's are 6.9secs 0-60

Thanks for this, thought it was very strange. There wouldn't have been a point in VW making the G60 if it wasn't quicker than the 1800 16v!!! How reliable are the G60's and the supercharger? Am I right in thinking it needs overhauling every 60k??? How often will it need replacing?? Any other associated problems with the G60??

As for G60 charger questions there are a lot of people on here that know loads.

Will do, is that in the Knowledge base section?? I've just had a look in there and it says the 0-60 time for the G60 is 8.9 sec's. I take it this is incorrect??

no disrespect to valver owners but I can assure you a G60 is faster than a valver

 

I should say so! My valver is quick enough, but my mates modded G fkn flies. Brown trouser quick. I want one, wish i'd held out a bit longer and found a good nick G, but hey, you live and learn...

It's because the 16v will reach 60mph in second gear but, I believe, the G60 ratios are shorter and you need two gear changes to get there.

 

Correct me if I'm wrong.

 

Incidentally, 1.8 16v and VR6 fuel usage is not as dissimilar as you may expect...

Don't think it's the ratio's, as the 1.8 16v actually has the lowest/closest ratios of all the corrados, it's more to do with the 7,200 limiter on the 1.8!

it IS the gear ratios... 16V will hit 60 in second, G60 needs third which adds on around a second to the 0-60 time... IIRC the valver's 0-60 is very similar to a standard G60s... Don't forget though that VW quotes its figures with half a tank of fuel, 2 passengers and luggage in a complete showroom standard car, unlike several other manufacturers who strip the car out and run it on vapours to make them seem as fast as possible... ;)

 

Mid range though, the G60 shows its true colours and will leave a valver in its dust! 8)

Thanks for the offer Matt, Think I'm gonna hold out for a VR6.....I got an insurance quote on one today and not nearly as bad as I thought.

 

Anyone know Roughly what MPG a VR6 returns and what year did they stop making them (96???)

ALL Corrado production was stopped in July/Aug 95...........tho some are late registered..........mpg wise low 20's round town and mid 30's at steady 75mph

I get about 28mpg out of my VR, but long, sensible speed motorway journies will get you a bit more (maybe 32... :lol: )

 

The last VRs were made in '95, so N plate. A handful did get registered on a '96 P plate, but I think they were still made in '95.
