ISV Ques - P2 - Quick Reply Needed

Recommended Posts

This has being going on for up to 6 months now, I'll give you the brief history and what its doing.

What it's doing:

The car drives fine, power. economy all seems to be as was.

Sometimes (say 1 out of 8 starts) it starts with a little bit of a misfire, like it's waking up in the morning and getting the phlegm out of its throat! This stops after no more than 30secs. After this stops the car then decides to idle between 1,300rpm and 1,800rpm, no lower (like I've got my foot on the accelerator a little).

When it gets warmer (I reckon when the auto choke disengages?) it then idles at around 300-500rpm, just above cutting out, fluctuating a little.

It usually only carries on this for between 5 & 15 mins before going back to normal.

It only seems to start doing this when I start the car, mainly when cold but has done it after being used. It has started mid-driving a few times though, just not often.

When:

Last Sept-Oct it did the above and then stopped doing it all together until the middle of December, when it started again. Like I say, about 1 in 8 starts, say 2-3 times a week.

If you understand all this, any thoughts?

Cheers

Andy

Oh, the idle control valve was cleaned when it was serviced at PSI in August.

He did say a bit of oil was in or on (cant remember) one of the spark plugs. Could this be a cause?

I also have cheap GSF HT leads on.

It's a VR6.

Got back from 1 hours drive today, driving was fine but it was idling the whole time when stopped at 250rpm!

Just wen out to move it and I couldn't get it started for quite a while! It was turning over as if it wanted to start but just couldn't quite get there! Once it did start it was idling at 1,200rpm then! Grrrrr!

What the hell could it be? Wouldn't a spark plug do it throughout the rev range, where as this is only at idle?

It's going to PSI on the 20th, I'm taking it to a local (non vw specialist but v good) garage on Friday, he seems to think its the Idle Control Valve sticking? Too much rev's, too little revs?

I had exactly the same fault on mine a couple of days back but mines an early 16v, a misfire on startup, then the misfire cleared but then it was idling between 300-500rpm. I knocked the ignition off, restarted it and it was fine. It hasn't done it before and hasn't done it since.

Don't suppose anyone knows the part number for the Idle Control Valve? VW cant find it, the only thing they THINK it might be costs £550 and isn't in stock!

Slight hissing at the back of the engine is normal, is the ISV damper (oval plastic box) as long as there's no air leaks or blockages inside, the noise is ok.

Yes, MK3 VR6 ISV has same part number as Corrado VR, the part number is on this forum somewhere.

ICV, ISV, ISCV yep all the same item.

That pic of the ISV looks slightly different to mine and the mk3 one I bought for spares recently, I don't remember it having a black plastic outlet on it. Might be worth emailing them for the year/part no. then looking up the corrado number on here. 1995 Mk3's defo had the same part, maybe thats a later one?
