raising compression??----ADVICE PLEASE

need some advice please as to what to look out for,or if this could cause a problem. but going to view a '90 16v mk2 golf later an it has

 

"Full engine rebuild raised compression & ported polsihed head ( all genuine VW parts) Less than 20,000 miles ago

 

Fully uprated & re-built gearbox."

 

is ok to raise the compression?

Depends what he done to raise the compression?

 

Just skimming the cylinder head will raise the compression slightly. This might be a fancy way of saying that. Ask him what was done?

not sure,will be speaking to him soon, just wanted some sort of idea first.

Milling the cylinder head, thinner headgasket, different pistons...seem to be three common ways to increase compression.

Why was the C/R raised?

Is it using long duration cams?

If so then you need to work out the dynamic C/R to see if it's done right.

It could just be advertising BS, you know, he had the head decked and that’s the increase in compression. Raising the compression of a KR significantly isn't wise and the gains are minimal unless as Chris says it is to recover some of the lost dynamic compression due to high lift cams, which are also a waste of money on a road going 1800 KR.

One thing i can say is that i had an Audi 80 years ago and skimmed 1mm off the head and the difference was amazing, it revved higher and faster and the fuel economy and power were noticeably improved, what a difference for 1mm, so things can make a difference but also they need to be done right else too high and the lean mixture will burn a hole down the side of the piston!

thanks for advice chaps, still not sure what was done to it but it was a flyer!! but past on it due to body condition......but saw another an put a deposit down on that :mrgreen:
