DEL VR6's Corrado (56k get broadband!)

I got my polish from http://www.cleanyourcar.co.uk and i just got the 250ml bottles to start out with thikning they wouldnt last long but i have done 2 cars so far and have plenty left so they last well. The 3.01 IP is £7.95 but is out of stock and has been for a while but there is PO91L IP which is £6.94 i also have this and it does the job. The Final Finish again there are 2 types i have the 106FF which is £8.95 but there is PO85RD FF which is £7.95, i dont have this though so dont know what its like.

 

The #83 is a medium abrasive which is why it probably isnt good enough, especially with a PC as remember i am using a rotary which builds up more heat and thus produces more cutting power than the PC so the IP was good enough and even the #83 may work with it, with the PC you may need a more powerful polish such as the Power Gloss which is £6.94 and is a very high abrasive polish so use with caution, i had to use some on the golf and it just made sure i kept my pad moist with some QD and i didnt let the surface get too hot, i had to go over again though with a FF after as the PG leaves lots of scratches behind.

The 3.01 IP... isn't that Menzerna??? There is a supplier on DTWORLD who is doing a deal on the 3 for £40.00 which is a bargain....

 

Your a brave man jumping onto a Rotary 1st.....

Yes mate all the polishes i mentioned above are Menzerna which is all i have used so far (apart from some AG Paint Renovator first time). Yeah £40 does sound like a a good deal, is that for larger bottles though? A good deal is the Menzerna starter kit from cleanyourcar which is 5 250ml bottles for £30.95 which is a cracking buy and they will last you a fair while, you will mainly use the IP and FF though so the rest should last an age.

 

Yeah i have been told numerous times im brave for starting on the rotary, but i couldnt justify a PC just yet and i knew if i folled guides and practised on a scrap panel (or sisters old golf :lol:) first then i should be fine. Its not as difficult as some people make you, you just have to get comfortable and let the polisher do the work not try and make it go where it doesnt want to etc.

Did you buy the Silverline Rotary... I did get a good deal on all my stuff... Paid around £260.00 which included all polishes and pads mentioned before and the PC with transformer and amassive long extension cable too...

 

Do you think the rotary is a better option or buy ???

Well i cant really compare as i havent used a PC but thats the choice of the pros and supposed to be very good to learn with. I just went for the rotary because it was cheaper at £40 on ebay plus delivery so about £50 all in. Its not the best out there, the likes of the Makita's are £170 on ebay so i imagine are a lot better but i just wanted to learn so the silverline seemed good enough.

 

Thats definately a good deal you got there though!

Yeh was a good price..... Just need to stock up on the menzerna range now, as most of the cars I have are VAG or BMW.... Plus all the people I know have german cars... so the paint is gonna be tough.....

 

The starter pack does look very good though at that price.... May just order some today and see how it goes....

 

What clays do you reconmend... Up untill now i've used the one that came with the megs QD kit.... Just need to buy them individually now... :roll:

Marcus, the pads i use are just the 6" ones that came with the polisher which arent the best tbh, there are 3 different ones for different polishes etc which is good but they have squared edges and the soft ones are very prone to tear if you catch an edge or a crumpled bit of masking tape and sprays foam all over the car! :mad: but i will just use them for now until they are nackered then get some proper ones, either megs ones or the Sonus DAS ones with a 5" backing plate.

 

As for clay i use Sonus Green clay as its quite mild so doesnt leave any damage but at the same time still does the job. You can buy these in sets of 2 with a little box to store them in or individually HERE. You can still use the QD with them, i tend to use the Sonus Glyde but thats because i got that with mine.

Yeah i would like to have a go with a tornado red car to see if i can tackle oxidization as well as swirls. I would imagine i could as it will cure the fading whilst getting rid of swirls.

 

Im doing a red BMW soon which is actually pretty mint but the owner wants it looking perfect for shows etc so i said i would machine it. I might find that even though it looks very red that a machine polish will bring it up that little bit which im actually looking forward to seeing.

I dont fancy wheel polishing, looks like fcuking hard work :shock: i actually have all the buffing stuff for a drill to polish up metal as my dad polished up the frame on his racing R1 which come up awesome! You can of make it out in THIS pic.

Haha i know mallory as well as my own COCK :lol:

 

Mallory has racing practise days every wednesday so we used to practise there a LOT and the first racing group we were in raced mainly at mallory. I actually like the track despite being small and with very few turns and no left handers really. Gerards is an awesome corner, you can pick up some bloody high speeds round there, into triple figures easily ME ON GERARDS and i have even had my elbow down there before by hanging RIGHT off the bike :twisted: :lol:

 

Yep it would be interesting getting round the hairpin in a car with a poor lock! Good job cars dont go round the Bus Stop as thats tight on a bike :shock:

Oh and im not impressed with the added chicane (Edwinas) just before the lake esses (or dunlop esses as they are formally called) as its ruined the pace you used to get round the esses and although it was added to reduce bad crashes on the esses it actually creates a LOT more smaller crashes and collisions now its added! GAY! :lol:

 

Devils elbows also a nasty bend if taken wrong, seen many a highside there in my time and if you crash there at a high speed you know about it. A guy i used to know came off there and he was in a bad way after and he was an 18 stone bodybuilder!!

Ok so my mate decided to keep his Audi A3 for a bit longer before selling it, but he is hoping to sell it soon and so asked me to use my new found skills and give it a machine polish.

 

So he came round 9am sunday morning and we began straight away. The first thing i did was soak the wheels, arches, lower half of the car, tailgate and door shuts with APC diluted 10:1 in my Lidl 5ltr pump sprayer.

 

Then i soaked the car in foam using the Superspray mixed with cheapy Tesco shampoo and some Chemical Guys Maxi Suds and letit soak for 10 minutes. Then rinsed off. I actually bought a Karcher pressure washer and foam lance in the week but didnt want to use it so early on a sunday morning :lol: but the superspray did the job as it was too dirty.

 

After rinsing i washed it using the 2 bucket method, Zymol shampoo and a lambs wool mitt for top half of the car and the megs wash mitt for lower half, wheels and door shuts.

 

Then i gave the car a clay using a Sonus green clay bar. And even though the car is washed regularly it is parked at the side of the road and so has collected quite a lot of dirt as shown in the pics:

After claying the car we washed it again, dried it and then moved it into the garage to start the machine polishing.

 

It looked bad in the sun but we couldnt believe how bad it was under halogen light :shock:

The picture shows it pretty bad but in the metal looked a LOT worse.

 

So out with the Silverline machine polisher, Megs pads and Menzerna polishes. I started with some Final Finish on a finishing pad and this removed a lot of the swirls, then i tried the FF on a polishing pad and this got out about 90% of the swirls which we were both happy with as we didnt see the point going for 100% swirl removal as he would only go and add some when he next washes the car, plus i dont have a paint depth reader so if i only took 90% of swirls out i knew i werent taking off too much paint!

I carried on with the combination of FF on a polishing pad for the whole car and in some areas there were still quite a few swirls left, but it was significantly better than before which is all he wanted to sell it really.

As i machined each panel he followed me with some SRP to fill in the majority of left over swirls. Then after the whole car was machined and SRP'd i went over with some Clearkote Red Moose Glaze followed by Collinite 476s wax. I would of personally preferred to use Victoria Concours wax for a better finish but as he's selling i thought it would be better for a more durable wax so went with the collinite. Then we polished the glass with AG Glass Polish, protected the wheels with some AG EGP, and dressed the tyres with Megs Endurance Gel.

Total time taken was 10 hours :shock: but worth the effort as it looked great when it was done and my mate was well happy with it! I was nackered afterwards, and luckily had today off work so i have just chilled out :lol:

Yep going back to uni for my final year in october and i do plan on doing this as a part time job so i dont have to work in a shop or something sh*t like that :lol: dont fancy getting a van though, going to try and get a tidy mk1 old school, and probs take rear seats out 8) lol.

 

We didnt do inside, but we did have a fair few tea brakes, went KFC for some lunch and my mate popped round for a bit so chatted for a bit, so without brakes and messing about itwould of been shorter. At the minute i do take ages but i take my time as im scared to leave holograms everywhere etc, but i do want to try and speed it up a a bit as its just too tiring taking so damn long!!

Would love to see what you could do with the bonnet of my car mate at some point, just as a test.. i've tried so many different types of polishes on it and within a day of cleaning it, it just fades again and looks screwed. I know it can be cleaned as when you first stick on paint cleaner it comes up looking like new.. will have to bribe you with some beers (and food) or something to come and have a go!

No worries Jim, i dont mind tackling the bonnet for ya. You might not necessarily need me though, the machine polisher would certainly bring it back up, but if the paint cleaner is bringing it up then that may be all you need. The key to stop oxidisation is to apply some glaze whch will add oils into the paint and then use a good sealant to protect from UV rays. So you could try giving it a go over with the paint cleaner to bring the colour up, then a glaze such as Megs #7 or the stuff i have and highly recommend, Clearkote Red Moose Glaze. And then seal it with some Autoglym Extra Gloss Protection. Then you could also add a layer or 2 of wax to protect it further.

 

But if that doesnt work by all means gimme a shout and i will pop over one weekend and help you out, although im not a beer drinker :oops: :lol:

My mate received his brand spanking new subaru impreza wrx last week and the first thing i said after saying it looks good is "Your paint looks terrible!" holograms and swirls everywhere from where it was rushed to get done in time so they obviously whipped round with a buffer and washed it with sponges etc and being a black car has shown it up big time! I couldnt believe how bad brand new cars are!

 

So anyway, i told him that i would be willing to sort it out for him and he didnt fancy me taking a machine polisher to it just yet so i said in that case i would just give it a good go over with some SRP to fill in as many swirls and holograms as possible to tone it down a bit and then protect it. So he agreed to that and came round on sunday afternoon.

 

No before or during pics im afraid as it was originally going to be a quick job but ended up taking a bit longer and so didnt bother taking many pics.

 

Process was spray wheels, arches, door/boot shuts, lower half of doors and tailgate with APC in the 5ltr pump sprayer and leave to soak for a bit. Then broke out the Karcher pw with karcher foam lance and foamed the whole car with a mix of cheapy tesco shampoo and Chemical Guys Maxi Suds which gave a nice thick foam, left to soak for about 10 minutes and then pressure rinsed off. Then washed the wheels just using warm soapy water and a wash mitt as they had not long been sprayed and werent particularly dirty anyway. Rinsed wheels and whole car again and then washed car with TBM using Zymol shampoo and a lambs wool mitt. Then dried using Last Touch and a Sonus Ultimate Drying Towel.

 

I offered a clay at this point as i know new cars can still be dirty, but it were too bad with the wipe test so decided to leave it and go straight to polish.

 

Gave it 2 coats of SRP applied with microfibre applicator pads worked in circular motions and then up and down and left to haze after applying it to the whole car. Then buffed off and re-applied.

 

After the SRP a lot of the swirls were covered and the whole car looked much better! So to protect it i went for 2 coats of EGP left about an hour each coat to cure. The EGP gave the car a lovely wet finish and so decided to leave it like that and not apply a wax as the owner was happy with the finish and level of protection from the EGP.

 

Then i polished the wheels with SRP and sealed with EGP. Polished glass with AG Glass Polish and just gave the plastics/rubbers a quick wipe with AG Vinyl and Rubber Care due to them being brand new and didnt need bringing back to life! And also tyres had already been treated by the dealers so didnt bother with them either.

Needless to say my mate was very pleased with the result as he has been calling me anal because of the amount of work i put into cleaning my own car etc but now he takes it all back :lol: And he will be making an order from clean your car very soon to start washing and caring for it himself as because he works for a car dealership he usually gets the valeters to give his car a quick wash but they use strong TFR for every wash and i told him that if he gets them to wash it all my hard work will be wasted! :D

 

Watch this space for a full paint correction detail on a rather tasty BMW 318is at some point (if my mate actually lets me know a weekend to do it :roll:), a full hand detail (same as scooby) on an EVO 8 FQ340 and a full paint correction on a very tasty and not shown off enough corrado vr from a member on the forum :wink:
