Tyre size - Legal restrictions on stretched look

Hi,

 

I have been mailing Image Wheels for some quotes on alloys etc.

 

I commented that I was after a stretched euro look & told them I had 9 x 16's on my Rallye with 215/40/16 tyres.

 

They were concerbed about this....this was their advice...

 

"max width of wheel to fit that tyre as listed by the tyre companies and to

E.T.R.T.O regulations is 8.5 wide if you have an accident your insurance

will be void and the company who fitted the tyres could be hit with a min

£5,000.00 fine."

 

Might be useful to you when considering tyre sizes...

If the wheel pokes out past the arch and isn't covered by tyre, isn't that an MOT failure too?

 

215s on 8Js is just about flush, 8.5s is starting to stretch and 9s are stretched.

It is also wort to take note that some manufacturers allow their tyres to be fitted 9-16 and it is approved by TÜV. These include Dunlop SP2000/9000, Toyo and some Fulda's I think.

 

If you go to Steffan.de you can register and they can send you the TÜV-approval for their Steffan EVO 9-16 and you will have a complete list of manufacturers. If in doubt you can also get in touch with the German supplier of the make in question to give you a reifenfreigabe. I did this on my Hankook Ventus K102 as fitted to my old RH Cups 8-14. You need to provide the weight of the car, rim width, top speed etc to gain the certificate
