I have been pricing up and contemplating a new audio system for my car details are below.

I have decided against component speakers due to the hassel of wiring and the location of the crossovers.

 

I am not a fan of big bass which is why i don't want a sub.

 

My budget is under £500, I just want to know whether this setup will sound nice and powerful and whether all the components will be compatible.

 

I am a total newbie when it comes to ICE so any help/recommendations are welcome!

Personally mate, and many will disagree I'm sure, I wouldn't get pioneer anything for the car.

 

I use loads of their products elsewhere, but for the car I'm not so sure.

 

For a cheap head unit I would go for an Alpine. And for cheap speakers maybe JLAudio. They're pretty good for the money in my experience. And infinity. Very nice sound for the dosh.

 

Amp - not sure. I'd buy a 2nd hand one - personally it would be a mission, but they're hard to find.

Yeah, don't get me wrong Wires - I have a house full of pioneer dj gear and a gorgeous cd recorder, but for budget car hifi I'd go elsewhere.

Could you recommend me an Alpine Headunit under £200 which has got full ipod support?

Yeah I've got an alpine with the ipod controller in the glove box mate - properly wired in so I never touch the ipod. It even charges it up.

 

Can't remember the model number - 2 mins and I'll go and have a look.

That's my head unit. I got a free ipod thing (also available on that link) so shop around for a deal. Both together are definately available for less than 200 now.

 

imo it's a very good head unit for the money. And it has proper turny knobs on the front for volume etc which I like personally. Old skool.

Have a look at some infinity's mate. Nice sound. The tweeters are fairly weak but you don't want components, so it's all good.

 

Get some big heavy 6x9s for the parcel shelf?

Looking on the infinity website, they do some nice 20cm coaxials http://www.infinitysystems.com/car/prod ... ion=EUROPE

 

But i cant seem to find them for sale anywhere...

 

Im not overly keen on 6x9s I dont think they will sound punchy enough for what I want :?

Its really not a lot of extra work to put components in instead of co-ax's in the front doors, the crossovers can very easily be hidden behind the trim... And the improvement in sound is out of this world.

 

I wouldnt bother looking at rear speakers, get good components in the front doors, then a set of Genesis 6x9 subs in the rear parcel shelf with a decent 4 channel amp.

Thats £350 leaving you £150 for a head unit of your choice, though personally I would steer clear of Alpine as the ytend to sound a bit bright for my tastes, depends on your ears and what you like to listen to though....

 

Then you need to allow a bit for cabling and a MDF rear shelf.... Say another £50...

 

That lot would give you a very nice sounding system with all your boot still available.

You'd be suprised how good the alpine sounds when used with the proper line output on an ipod, rather than the headphone output. Which is what the fella is doing.

 

Never thought I'd noticed the head unit contributing to brightness tbh, but I totally agree it depends what you like.

Half the problem is im lazy as sin! Im already worried about getting the amp wired up to the battery? where is the best location for the amp?

Easiest place for the amp is on the back of the rear seats.. Wiring is very easy...

 

I would really really urge you to consider the system i suggested rather than go all cheap Infinity gear......

I never knew 6x9 subs existed! do they really work well though or would I be better off with some larger coaxial speakers? I want a good level of treble you see and I dont want the rears to drown out the fronts if that makes sense!

Genesis are the only people who make 6x9 subs AFAIK. They specifically designed them for people who do not want a huge bass build in the boot. Thye will not give you the level or depth of sound you would get from a boxed dedicated sub, but give good results from the guys I have spoken to who have tried them.....

 

I really would not use large co-ax speakers.

 

If you look at all the sound quality competition audio cars, they all use front 2 or 3 way component systems with rear bass. Good quality front components, well installed with a suitable amp will give you all the treble and soundstage you could ask for. By balancing the levels you get he bass output to blend wit hthe front soundstage how you like it. The rear subs WILL NOT overpower the front end in the system i suggested.

You seem like you really know your stuff so im gonna take your word for it! What would you recommend in terms of headunits?

Headunits are different, you really need to go to a decent car hifi shop and listen to a few different ones through the same set of good components. My persoanl preference is for Pioneer, Alpine i dont like the sound of, they sound too harsh for me, and Kenwood I find hard to use as too many buttons.... JVC are also very good.

Well mate its too late now cause I've done it!

 

I have ordered the Alpine CDA-9857R headunit with the ipod kit for £219.99 + the JBL GTO75.4 amp you recommended for £99.

 

I gunna order the Genesis components and subs on friday when i get paid!

 

I managed to find a discount code off the net for free delievery so thats saved another £10 :D

No it doesnt, you will need a cabling kit.....

 

If your only looking to use the single amp, i would get one of these....

I would probably get the CAD one if your ordering hte rest of the kit from there....

 

You will also need a few metres extra speaker wire, you will need to measure up exactly how much you need but the kit will not have enough....

 

Also, you will need to make up a new parcel shelf out of MDF to mount the subs firmly too, so get some speaker box covering to trim it with so your not looking at bare MDF.
