upgrading speedo clocks. please help...

Recommended Posts

will the orange needled vr6 clocks go straight into a 2.0 16v without having to change the electrical loom plug going in to it? (are they the same so it would just be a case of plug and play?)

also on g60's and 16v's there is a vaccum line plugged into the back of the speedo aswell as the electrical loom plug. does the vr6 have this too?? i cant remember if it did or not.

if i unplugged the vaccum line will it effect anything?

i would just buy a late style 16v speedo but they are hard to come across at a reasonable price. vr6 ones are much more common, i no the rev. counter is slightly different but im sure it wont notice too much.

any advice would be appreciated guys and gals

IIRC the vacuum line is for the MPG within the MFA, not sure if you can do a straight swap, I think the VR's have electronic sender for the MPH whereas the 16v/G60 are cable driven.

Someone else may confirm this though as there is always the possibility that I'm talkin complete cock...

I think they vary between models and years, VR6's use the ECU to calculate MPG from the map for fuelling and the early 16v's have a dash with just one bulb for the indicators (not the two arrows) and a machanical mileometer, this type also has a different wiring connector at the back to the later 16v clocks, although I've heard it is possible to fit the later 16v clocks with a bit of messing around, presumably with the right connector blocks off a later loom.

1.8 16v's can have mechanical or the later style dash depending on year and the 2L 16v cars have a rev counter with a lower redline and a different fuel gauge.

G60s dont have a cable, they are electronic, same as the VR6 and 2.016v i believe.

VR6 clocks are setup for a 6 cylinder engine for the rev counter (and all the MFA signals)

16V is a 4 cylinder engine, so the rev counter won't count properly and most of the MFA utilities will be a mile out.

IIRC the multiplug on the back is also different...

simple answer is, no, the clocks won't fit...

What you can do though, is to swap the needles and faces from VR6 clocks onto 16V clocks (done this to my G60) so that you have the red needles and different fonts on your original clocks... ;)
