Satnav plunges

I borrowed my sisters and to test it, i told it to take me to the motorway from my house. It took me on a route that is way off course. The way i go is the shortest and doesnt involve any back streets etc so the gadget was totally wrong.

 

We (she) also used it to take us to the NEC one time and even then it was no where near the shortest / quickest route. I know that for a fact cos we go to the NEC and know all the roads around there.

 

Besides, the nerd in me loves reading maps even when im not going anywhere, just at home doing nothing. You cant read a Tom Tom can you?

My MK1 Tom Tom One (that sounded weird!) has been absolutely perfect I might add....... it's navigated me through deepest, darkest Wales, Scotland and....... Birmingham.....with total accuracy and ease.

 

You can actually program them to NOT take you down scenic routes that have Fords, tolls, sheep, super market trolleys in the road, low bridges etc etc :lol:

 

And keeping the maps up to date helps too..... because you never know, we might actually get a new road one day!

Agree: Satnav has its uses. For one as a white van driver I rely on the thing for the last few miles in an unknown town, where I have to make a delivery / see a customer.

 

It also can be handy for when you wish to divert from the paper-map-planned route, eg. when you're stuck in a massive traffic jam, but still have the opportunity to take an exit off jammed up motorway.

 

It proved to be handy on our journey last August, when we visited the Ring, went to Karmann etc., even though everyone had paper maps, too. Still, I had the whole route pretty much stored in my grey matter (or what's left of it) ready to ignore the satnav when I felt I knew better.

Now you mention it, we did pass loads of Mondeos, Fiestas, Escorts and Cortinas along the whole route.

What on earth must've been going through her mind, honestly! Serves her right frankly.

 

If the sat nav she used was anything like my Garmin, she'll be getting nothing from a law suit as mine comes up with a disclaimer when you switch it on. Bet she'll try though.

 

Speaking of sat navs directing you down odd routes, while planning my route through the alps mine wants to send me down "unpaved road", whatever that means. Good thing I'll be on my new bike :twisted:
