TVR Chimaera's

Recommended Posts

I'm thinking about selling the Porsche this year and i fancy a TVR Chimaera as a replacement. Fancy a convertible this summer.

I know some of you have one and i just wanted to know what to look out for and which model is the best.

I think i'll be going for a 4.5 for around £13k.

TIA

Chimaera's have the reputation as being the most reliable TVR ever produced. 4.5 is best compromise between power and relaibility, the last 5.0's were a lot more fragile.

As with everything you need a comprehensive service history with a recognised dealer / specialist. Trim is fragile but mechanically pretty bulletproof. Had a few friends with Chims who "upgraded" to Tuscans and T350's and all regretted it.

Im unsure about reliability but my borther in law had a 5.0 one and it was stupidly fast... Great car....

Yeah, been on Pistonheads for the last week trawling through the posts. I'd love a Cerbera but i really want a convertible for the summer. I miss my bike so this is the next closest thing.

IIRC I posted something on this a while back.

Just go for the later (95 on) Chim and you'll be fine..

Thinks like PAS, Serpentine engine (better cooling), later diff, Borg Warner G/box all help to make things a lot more reliable.

Having owned an early & late Chim, the differerences are quite significant.

Thanks Tom. Read through most of that and all i can say is. If you like wasting petrol on nothing but listening to your engine then buy one of these. They are brilliant toys. Possibly the fastest and definetly the scariest car i've ever owned. Loving every minute of it so far and its even broke down already. I dont care though, only an Alternator. Being a Rover V8 thats not going to be a problem.

Havent driven it in the wet yet and to be honest i'll try to avoid that if i can.

Here's some picies. Its a 99 plate 5 Ltr .

Cheers Tom. Are you going to Inters next month? My Rado will finally make an appearance in Englandshire.

Was playing about on photoshop and fancied some 17 inch Keskins on the TVR, the guys on Pistonheads hate it. lol

I quite fancy a V8S or 350SE/390i wedge- what are peoples thoughts on those?

I thinkk the S's look nice and 'old school' britsh sports car- just wirh a 4l V8 under the bonnet, whilst the wedges are...ermmm...the proverbial 2 fingers to the PC brigade.....

I've had a Chimaera 4.5, and can confirm it was utterly wonderful.

Didn't like being sat around, admittedly, and the roof leaked a bit (and I do mean only a bit), but by god it was fun ;-)

The kind of car where you sit at traffic lights hoping for a boy racer, and then stick your right foot down, leaving only two huge rubber trails and the distant sound of a manic hyped-up idiot screaming 'AHAHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA' Literally.

HiAsAKite - i was at a tvr meet last month and a local lad had his wedge for sale. This is his email to the tvr yahoogroup:

"Well I've talked about it long enough but time has come and my 400SE is

officialy up for sale. If anyone knows of anyone looking for a very

nice metalic gun metal grey Wedge with polished engine bay and clean

red chassis then drop me a line for details and photos. I'm based in

Edinburgh."

I had a look around at it and its beautifull - immaculate even. Dont know how much he is looking for, but pm me and i will give you his details ( i may even have a couple of photos of it hanging around ). May just be usefull to see what you get for your money. This guy is real enthusiast and i dont even think he wants to sell it ( he said it had been for sale far about 3 years but he just hadnt told anyone ! ). I suspect it would be a peach. Even so, you are going to need to get your hands oily to run one ! Have you got a garage ( and a well stocked wallet ? )

For the record - i like them and yes they are rather 80s but in a good way !

Yup- have a garage :-) - only trouble is my rado lives in there and it would mean parting with her, or parking her outside and losing the golf....

if I didn't have the rado I would buy one tomorrow- trouble is I'm rather attached to it....and it s a'good'un'....(even if LHD)....

Have pm'd you...

KUTR:- Out of interest if you had an S2 what made you get rid of it and get the rado?

The S2 was my intro. to TVR.

Quickly followed by an early Chim, Cerbera and then another later Chim...

Only one reason why I now have a Corrado.....KIDS!
