yes today I have had the pleasure of detecting 2 problems with my C.

 

1st: I seem to be having a slight "clicking" noise coming from what I believe to be the gearbox, it only happens in first gear until mid revs.

Maybe worn parts due to first gear extreme acceleration? Who knows?

 

2nd: I have a coolant leak which looks to being coming from the auxiliary coolant pump, I'm not sure if these are sealed units or if I can repair it.

dunno about problem 1

 

but my aux coolant pump also had a slight leak......would pop the bonnet and find a small puddle on top of the G/box.....luckily for me my car was still under the used car warranty that i got when i bought it and this was covered.....otherwise your looking at approx £114+vat and 30 mins fitting

Clicking from the gearbox could be a CV joint... does it do it cornering at low speeds as well?

 

Metallic clicking, plastic clicking? Any other info may jog someone's memory into a diagnosis and possible cure... 8)

 

Hopefully it'll be something reasonably easy to sort out... 8) Always think positively, that's what 'rado ownership has taught me... :? :lol:

Yeah I agree with Henny on the inner CVs making the noise. They tend to make a light clicking noise under load whan pulling away, when wearing out. When completely knackered, the click turns into a full on crunching/louder click noise!

Once the car is on the move and overcome the initial pulling away strain, the noise goes.

 

Could be that....not saying it is but get them checked for peace of mind's sake.

 

The aux pump is a sealed unit I'm afraid and cannot be repaired. That and the main pump leak when the internal seals have worn down. The main pump is only £25 though. God knows why the aux one is over 4 times the price. If VW fitted a proper main pump in the first place, it wouldn't need an assistant!

 

For your info, the aux pump comes on when the coolant reaches 100 deg C and during the fan cycle when the engine is switched off.

No.1 I half expected and 2 I expected so fortunately no shock to the system.

 

I will attempt to change the pump myself (unless somebody has a good reason why I shouldn't) and the gearbox, which is not my forte, can be done by a pro. Is that a specialist job or can I save some cash and let an ordinary Joe carry out the work?

 

Incidently the leak from the pump is excreting from the seam/join running around the unit. Is it not possible to somehow seal this, or is it just plain knackered?

i would imagine everything is possible :wink: but i would still budget on a new one...........DIY sealing it should really on be a short term measure til you can afford to buy the part IMHO.........if mine wasn't covered by the warranty i had i would have bit the bullet :( ......afterall thats one part of the VR6 engine that you want to be in tip-top condition :wink:

When I needed a new aux pump vw told me they could sell me a reconditioned one for £30 but didn't have any in stock so I ended up buying new so it's worth asking. Try Ford. Might be cheaper.

I have cured my ignorance by closely inspecting the Bentley manual, for some reason I had always believed the CV joint to be another name for the balljoint (don't ask me why), so when I heard "inner cv" I was none the wiser as to where this would be in the gearbox. Now I have studied the complete axle diagram and understand this is the Inner Constant Velocity Joint which (considering the noise) is a more than feasible reason for the problem.

 

Let he who has never made a prat of himself cast the first stone!

 

I managed to get a brand new aux pump from VW for £55+VAT, not bad eh? They told me they no longer deal in re-con pumps, but for that price I'm wondering if it IS actually re-cons they are selling and not new ones??

The prices of parts for older cars drops.

 

As an example, the headlight unit for the C used to be £140 + VAT. They now cost less than £90...

 

Any garage should be capable of doing the CV joints - you can even do them yourself if you like messy jobs...
