why should i have my corrado serviced?

Bit off topic but..talking of MOTs I'm booked in (non dealer, local VW though mainly air cooled) on Monday.

If you look at the classic car world (30 years +), there is a point in a cars life where it is no longer main dealer serviced and instead the work is done by specialists, can you see an e-type owner going to a Jaguar main dealer?

I dont think my dealers would even know what i was driving if drove up there in my Karmann Ghia.

 

I was speaking to a salesman from VW cos my wife wants a new golf, and when he asked what i drive i mentioned the C and the Karmann Ghia.

 

When i said a VR6 Corrado, he nodded and said "Ah, yes, the VR6 Corrado.... thats the one with the G60 engine in it, isnt it?"..... He didn't even know what the Karmann Ghia was.

I, too, reckon that if I turned-up at my local VW dealer they wouldn't know what a Corrado was! I service both my Corrado & Golf VR6s myself. It isn't difficult. I'm not planning to sell either car on anyway.

 

Incidentally, I don't think my Corrado has ever seen the inside of a VW workshop outwith its initial warranty period. Since then it has spent all its life at either AmD or Stealth, until I got hold of it. Have all of the bills since 1996, the total spent so far is eye-watering...

I think the main value in a service also is the checking of other things, I'm perfectly happy to change parts, but never 100% sure on wear limits etc. so I would only ever pay for a service for the advice.

 

We've pretty much established though that the majority of main dealer fitters are vastly under qualified to provide that advice anyay, so I don't see the point, may as well pick up any advisories that I don't spot at MOT time.

dealer stamp or not its a lot of money to shell out on a oil change , could probably put the money to better use on other areas of the car

Don't believe that a VW dealer will do all the checks they are suposed to be doing as per the manual. The state of my MOT failure brakes 5 months after a service was shocking to say the least. Now way could they have been checked at the service.

 

In fact don't even believe they are doing even the basics. After 10 years of VW service I took mine to Stealth, they asked me if I would like a new air filter and showed me what had just come out of my car. I've taken the air box off today and the filter they fitted is 2 now years old. Going on how it looks I recon the one they showed me from VW servicing was 6 or 7 year old.
