Serpentine Belt?

Recommended Posts

I'm going to look at a VR at the weekend, and I keep reading about the Serpentine (sp?) belt. What is it, were is it located, and how do I know if it is knackered? Any help on this would be very much appreciated.

Cheers.

It's the belt that drives the power steering, water pump and alternator. It's next to the airbox. A serpentine belt is basically several small V belts in one wide belt for improved grip and longer life. They last about 40-50K on average. If the belt is cracked or missing bits of rubber, then it's time for a replacement.

They cost £25 from VW.

My friend's Rado had a shot serpentine belt casing thingy (the casing in what the serpentine belt) and that cost him $2500 dollars to replace from VW!
