Matt GTi 0 Posted November 4, 2003 I'm going to look at a VR at the weekend, and I keep reading about the Serpentine (sp?) belt. What is it, were is it located, and how do I know if it is knackered? Any help on this would be very much appreciated. Cheers.
Kevin Bacon 5 Posted November 4, 2003 It's the belt that drives the power steering, water pump and alternator. It's next to the airbox. A serpentine belt is basically several small V belts in one wide belt for improved grip and longer life. They last about 40-50K on average. If the belt is cracked or missing bits of rubber, then it's time for a replacement. They cost £25 from VW. Kev
