cleaning electrical contacts

I have had a problem with my fan motor control, not the usual only works on 4, these only work on 3 and 4.

 

I have just taken the controls appart and bridged the connection with a screwdriver on settings 1 & 2, and whatdaya know. it works!

 

I am guessing the contacts need cleaning but am unsure how to do it. Is it a case of wet and dry with a bit of wd40 to clean it up? or do I need to re bend the contact?

 

I only ask as I dont want to break it, these things are hard to replace.

 

any ideas?

Dont worry about it, I bent the contact back up and gave it all a clean up. Everything working again. :D

Some electrolube and wire wool will do it

i use a metal sanding scouring pad from b&q and my dad likes to use a nail file lol works a treat though

Aye - a bit of emery paper/nail file/et al to get it back to a nice shine and/or a squirt of electrical contact cleaner (can get cans of it in Halfords)
