richn 0 Posted November 21, 2003 M-plate 2.0 16v, 86k apparently on the original dampers. Handling is sometimes scary, lots of barely controlled role, particularly on direction changes on uneven road. Quite scary sometimes. Obvious thing is nackered dampers (but they pass the 'bounce test'); 86k seems quite a lot for dampers. Anyone got any thoughts on how long dampers should last? Also, what are the symptinos of worn engine mounts? R.
Kevin Bacon 5 Posted November 21, 2003 The bounce test is not a true indicator of damper health, especially not a stiffly sprung car like the corrado! Sounds to me like they're goosed, but if it were me, at 86K, I'd be pulling them off anyway to fit some Konis  Kev
PhatVR6 0 Posted November 21, 2003 Mine had the oringinal VAG ones on, took them off at 66K, they were still as good as new.
dr_mat 0 Posted November 21, 2003 Mine has the original VW ones on. They fail the bounce test at 115k... I'm saving my pennies....
Kevin Bacon 5 Posted November 21, 2003 My VR ones were totally shafted at 78K! K
dr_mat 0 Posted November 21, 2003 As usual I think there are scales of "gone-ness" with the dampers, just like everything else. There's a huge difference between unsafe and fine-but-not-good-enough, but that distinction comes down to personal preference. My preference is to have good, so I'll be replacing at some point soon...

Fat Tony 0 Posted November 22, 2003 Mines are the originals and there now 13 years old (like the car) but have done few miles less than the above. Guess the non Vr's are a fair bit lighter

Joe M 0 Posted November 22, 2003 Anybody know the lifespan for Konis? I think mine have been on for about 4 years.
richn 0 Posted November 24, 2003 OK so my dampers may still be perfectly OK. Seems (unsurprisingly!) that they probably wear out sooner on VR6's, but I'm still convinced that there's something wrong in there somewhere. Maybe I just need to get someone who knows what they're talking about to give it a good once-over. Thanks for the comments.
