One day insurance policies

Recommended Posts

Quick question- need to get insurance for a day to pick a car up and bring it home. Only problem is i also need to tax it. If i transfer my current ins over for the day will they issue me with an ins cert so i can tax it or will they only give me a cover note?

Same question if i go to one of the specialist companies that do one day insurance.

Any ideas?

Gav

The specialist short term companies issue you a cert straight away that you can print out yourself. Insurance has to be valid for at least 2 months (afaik) to actually get a tax disk though!

different insurers have different rules, but normally you can add a second vehicle onto your policy for a week/fortnight or even longer for a fee.

the only factor which may hold you back is if the car is a higher insurance group than the car on your policy, some insurers may decline to accept this.

hope this helps

Is the car far away from where you live? As in.. could you pay for the car and just leave it where it is for a week or two while you wait for documents etc to arrive?

The post office that issues the tax is supposed to check the certificate of insurance is original and is valid for 2 months.

I have had Adrian Flux email me a PDF before of the cert so I can get tax without any problems, they ask if it is an original just say yeah, the original comes in the post the next day anyway.

Its kind of pointless having that rule as you could very easily doctor a pdf for another car and print it out and the post office wouldn't know any different, they don't check anything apart from the dates.

To buy tax online your car needs to show up on the MID - to check yours does go to http://www.askmid.com/ normally takes a few days after taking out a policy to show up.

I'm amazed that you haven't got a trade insurance policy. With the amount of vehicles you go through it'd be so much simpler.

* EDIT *

Holy cow. I just checked all my vehicles on that 'askmid' site and one of the bikes isn't showing as insured. I added it to my policy a few weeks ago and was riding it until the tax ran out at the end of last month. Sure enough I just tried to bin the SORN and apply for tax and it's shown as not insured. That's really shady.

Thanks for that link! I'll be giving my insurance company a good talking to tomorrow. I'm in shock that not only have I been riding the bike but it's been sitting in the garage uninsured as well. I can only assume they got the 'plate wrong when I gave it to them over the 'phone.

I don't think you need to be insured for 2 months, i was insured on a monthly policy (eCar) all last year for my old car and didn't have any trouble.

Don't worry you've probably not been riding round uninsured. They probably just haven't updated the details on the MID. This means your vehicle will be flagged as uninsured if you get pulled by the police. A quick call to the insurance company by the coppers when you present your producer will prove all is well.

But best not to get pulled in the first place for not being insured, eh?

Please remember that a lot of the generic short-term insurance companies such as DayInsure.com etc etc will not insure a modified car.

Always read the small print!
