Elusive sunroof switch at dealers...

Recommended Posts

I went to my local dealer (Citygate Ruislip) to get a replacement sunroof switch. They look up on ETKA - I check the screen out too - part ordered. Part arrives a week or so later and I collect. Instead of being a grey colour the switch part was a little beige. The buttons were different too - so my immediate reaction was this part has been superseded. I try it out by plugging the multisocket in and find that nothing happens. So on returning to VW I say its the wrong part - they check ETKA again and say the part is clearly not the same as the original - but they have to speak to "German Technical" to find out what to do...

Old part number: 1H0 959 855 B

New part number: 1H0 959 728 5YX

Does anyone here work for VW or come across this themselves? Anyone able to help out please?

What year is your Corrado?

There appears to be two different colours of switch for the later models and two for the earlier models and the part number 1H0 959 855 B doesn't apply to any of them.

later model switches are :-

Part number 1HO 959 728 5YX is a beige coloured switch for models made from 8/92 to 7/95.

Part number 1HO 959 728 H50 is a grey/blue coloured switch for models made from 8/92 to 7/95.

and the earlier model switches are:-

Part number 357 959 855 B is a unknown coloured (possibley grey or black) switch for models made from 9/88 to 7/92.

Part number 357 959 855 01C is a satin black coloured switch for models made from 9/88 to 7/92.

Its a 1994 car. The numbers you've found are apparently for a Mk3 golf - so sounds like they may have made the Corrado switch obsolete - which would be great news :? .

Part of the problem is that the local VW aren't in any hurry to sort this out - despite it being paid for. One irrate call later I've got the ball rolling (after waiting several days while they admitted to do nothing). As they have to speak to the "German Technical" as they call them - I was told by the "manager" that there can be delays on every single step to the "resolution" - and its therefore impossible to estimate how long it'll take to solve. But I can be assured that "they'll drop everything and make this their absolute top priority and that i'll be informed on every single step of the journey - however i might have to make a call every now and again to see how its going and trigger them to call the German Technical". Have you ever heard such a load of pish?

Thats why I hoped someone on here worked for VW and could maybe help me out rather than go through these clowns.

The first part number they quoted you 1HO 959 855 B is for the VW Golf years 1989 to 1999 and is not even a Corrado part

As far as i am aware none of the switches are obsolete.

1HO 959 855 B is the part number on my old sunroof switch though! The 'new' part number 1H0 959 728 5YX is the one they tried giving me - which was wrong

There are at least 3 different sunroof switch designs used in Corrados.

1. The square window-switch looking button for early Corrados that may or may not be the same as Mk2

2. knobby button one for 93ish era Corrados that you move the knob corresponding to what you want the sunroof to do, which I think was in early Mk3s but I might be wrong

3. The flat, 3-button with a round button in the middle jobber that was used in the latest Corrados and is the same (looking anyway) one as late Mk3s

When I say they are the same as mk2/mk3s I'm purely going on what the buttons look like - whether the electrics on the back are the same or not, I dunno, but if it's not a 525 part number then it'll have been used in something else as well as the Corrado. (e.g. those parts are all 357 and 1H0 numbers so they're Goof as well).

Thanks Dinkus - I've got the 'knobbly' one that you described - you push/pull the knob to open/close the sunroof (no funny jokes please lol)

I don't recognise the 525 part number you spoke of?

I was under the impression the Golf Mk3 part is interchangeable with all Corrado (good as its common in scrappies).

If the golf part didn't work maybe theres something else wrong with your sunroof?

I have a flat Golf switch fitted to my 1992 VR6 which originally has the "finger" style switch.

FYI,

My old (94) corrado had a hook style switch.

My new corrado (95) had the plain flat button switch & I don't like them!

So, the newer style button panel came out (part no 1H0 959 728) and a 2nd hand hook style button panel went in (part no 1H0 959 855B).

Both work faultlessly and are 100% compatible in my experience. Why not just buy another 2nd hand if the dealers are having so much aggro? I bet they aren't cheap new!

I do have a rather dull late push button style one (in grey) here if you want it FOC.

Just if anyone else comes across this - the dealers managed to speak with 'german technical' and the new part number is actually correct. They got another one in which was the correct colour - and that one worked first time. so guessing the first one they got was faulty. HTHs

Cheers for the help all :)

Ah cool, good to hear you got to the bottom of this. I might fit the hooky/knobby type one to my new C cos I prefer them.

God, people are going to be confused if they ever look at my car - it's got all manner of old and new parts swapped onto it.
