new 16v C, non starter

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

I have just come into the possession of 2 C's. Both 1.8 16v.

One is a write off as it was wrapped around a sign post, the other is fine other than the paint work and the fact that it doesn't start.

The previous owner is a mate who is moving into his first house, no garage there so he gave me the cars. I need to get the one sorted asap however I really can't afford to take it to the garage.

All I know about it is that under heavy acceleration it stuttered at about 4500 revs, over the next week it moved down the rev range until it just wouldn't start. My friend replaced the fuel filter thinking it could be that however it did not solve the problem.

Any ideas where to start? I am thinking fuel system first?

One thing to take into consideration, I am a total mechanical noob. Got a basic socket set, trolley jack, axle stands a a few other bits and pieces. I have also got the Bentley workshop manual but tbh it may as well be in Kilngon :D I am ready to spend a little bit on tools if needed, parts will be coming off the write off as annoyingly, that starts first time! Until I can afford to give it a full service that is. Thought about swapping the spark plugs over but it appears that the socket set I have doesn't have the right socket :(

Start by checking you have a spark, its prob not related but always good to start there.

Do thsi by removing the main coil lead from the dizzy, dangel the end near metal and crank engine over and see if a spark jumps from lead.

DONT HOLD ONTO IT THOUGH WHILE DOING THIS.

i SUPPOSE IT COULD BE TIMING RELATED, LIKE THE DIZZYS LOOSE OR A PULLEY HAS SLIPPED?

Opps caps

Currently charging the battery, once it has a charge I will try that out and report back.

Hopefully with a more detailed explanation of what the engine does when I try to start it.

Sounds like the hall sender in the dizzy has possibly broken down...May show up as an intermittent spark if you are checking for one.

so may it just be easy to replace the dizzy with one off the write off and remove it from the equation all together?

Yes, an easy process of elimination...But obviously you may have to tweak the ignition timing after the swap.

Mark the dizzy/head before removing the old one to get it somewhere near.

Smack bang between Shrewsbury, Telford and Stoke. Its a good 4 hour drive just to get to the outskirts of London from here.

Got some free time tonight so hopefully will be starting work on it.
