It wasn't the Alfasud either, I can't remember what it was, Lotus Sunbeam maybe?

 

And the Triumph Dolomite Sprint was the first production car with a 16v engine too IIRC?

 

I've had two MK1s and hated them both.

You're right on the Dolly Kev, deffo first production 16v engine.

 

The Sunbeam was a fruity ass car, hardly any around these days too. I would think it was definitely a contender.

The design most often considered to have started the hot hatch genre is the 1977 Volkswagen Golf GTI, (although some considers the first "true" hot hatch was the Simca 1100 dating from 1967/8 or Alfa Romeo Alfasud[1]). The Renault 5 Alpine also pre-dated the Golf GTI, being launched in 1976.

Kev, you're wrong about the Mk1 GTi.. In LHD anyway... (no infamous cross-brace brake bar)

 

Was put together after work by a bunch of White coated technicians...

 

Just because you've had two (with probably 100+k on them doesn't mean they're rubbish)

 

Been in a properly restored Stock Mk1 (New Old Stock used as much as possible) some years ago and was seriously impressed by all aspects..

 

You have to remember the Mk1 was concieved before most people on this forum and was never supposed to have a "Hot-hatch" version... but it spawned the modern Hot Hatch, wasn't until the MK1Gti that the Big manufactures saw the new trend...

 

Also look back at what eklse was achieving sub-9-sec 0-60 in 77, Porsche/Ferrari... not much else..

 

Alfa and Triumph were always considered Sporty BTW... and the Dolly was the first mainstream 16v engine.

 

Lotus Sunbeam was a rally homologation jobbie (like the Cossy RS500)

Wiki is pretty much people's opinion as opposed to hard fact most of the time. Lots of people view it as such as we're not even allowed to reference it at uni because of this.

 

Interesting to read what people think started the genre though :D

The Ford Escort has a brace bar aswell and that has good brakes.

VW's attempt at it was total sh1te!

But the Golf wasn't originally intended for the RHD market.....

My opinion of them is they're rubbish, I don't care if the world and his dog thinks it's the original and best. More power to the people who do. They go on about it being the original and best but you have to have a definite preference for older cars to see the appeal.

Dont really care how they drive tbh, its going to be better than that schitty polo i had, i just want one because they looks sooo cool 8)

Think i'll stick with my MK1 gti. As for your comments cheesewire i think you and i need words :censored:

 

The MK1's are great fun, yes compared to nowerdays standards they are abit dated but for the time they were damn good. Plus with a few tweaks here and there all of cheesewires negative comments can be updated and bettered. If your ever up my kneck of the world i'll take you for a spin in my MK1 GTI 1800 and see if i cant change your opinoin of them....That is if your man enough to go out in a proper car, one that you have to actualy drive and doesnt do everything for you?? :lol:

 

I think i have the best of both worlds, MK1 Golf gti and Corrado VR6! Wouldnt swop or change either of them! Proper VDub nut :lol:

Yeah - not so good. And really REALLY irritating that it apes the Scirocco's front grille. I wish VW would make their cars a little different on the front end to make them stand out a bit!

 

I agree with you Jim , they all look the bloody same, the interiors are all the boody same , its all a bit boring :sleeping: :sleeping: :sleeping:

I've always loved the Mk1 and 2, but haven't owned either.

I actually didn't like the mk4 when it came out (preferring the chunkier squarer look of the Mk3 which I owned), but I now own one and think it lookks good.

I didn't like the Mk5 when it came out either, especially the R32, which I thought was bonk compared with the mk4 R32. I now like it.

 

I actually do like the Mk6 though!!!!! Does this mean it will be the first VW golf since 1991 that isn't a grower for me?

 

I feel down less by this than the Scirocco, which is a travesty and perhaps why I have a better attitude to this.

It looks like the mk4 and mk5 were mating and their child put a scirroco mask on.

 

There were some Lotus Sunbeams at the Prescott hill climb, :luvlove: , don't think there were any mk1s....

The only Mk5 that looks good is the Gti the rest look cr@p, far worse than those standard Mk6 look. I think opinions will change when the Gti is revealed.

I'm very dissapointed my MK1 bashing hasn't caused a load of guys with pitch forks and straw hats to turn up at my front door, chanting "Down with the heretic!!" :lol:

 

At the end of the day, I prefer mine Honey roasted and the rest of you can eat your ham maple cured.... just keep your hands off my 6 year old vintage canadian cheddar and chilli chutney.

You're talking to the unconverted mate. I've been there and got the T shirt! I've had 8V and 16V MK1s, but they just didn't do anything for me. The only MK1 that ever interested me was Simon Faiers Candy Apple blue 16V back in the mid 90s.....the days when the "scene" didn't exist VW fans were less b1thcy with eachother and shared a common interest in innovation and new ideas. You certainly weren't regarded as a narrow minded cnut for not liking a MK1 in the good old days :D

Well Cheesewire lets agree to disagree on the MK1 :lol: I'll be round with the pitch fork later :lol: Nah only joking, each to there own.

At least we both have the common interest of the Corrado at heart. Oh and i do understand that everybody is differant and that is a good thing, life would be abit boring otherwise. I just get abit protective over my 4 wheeled kids :luvlove: As long as its a VW its good enough for me :notworthy:

Yeah its not going to be any time soon, havent got the spare cash at the min as im not selling the rado for it, just want to get one as a project car. Im hoping next month i can start looking. I am only going to spend between £500-£1k as want one that runs and is not rusty but is probably a bit tatty and needs some tlc. Then i can get it in the garage and start stripping and renewing :clap:

Herisites i bought my MK1 6 years ago for £500. It was very standard looking and needed abit of Tlc. Ive kept it fairly standard just tidied her up. So hopefully you will find one in similar condition. You will save a packet if your planning to do some of the work yourself. Definately alot cheaper than buying a MK6 and damn site more attractive :lol: Keep me posted with your mission!

You'll need more than a grand for an honest, unrusty MK1 GTI Rob....

 

I know from bitter experience that once the rust sets into a MK1, it will just keep coming back......but......Day mouldings in Boston (UK) sell some brilliant fibre glass wings and you can get plastic tailgates. The back panel is probably the worst area for repeat rot and you'll be wanting to replace the mild steel fuel filler neck ASAP with a plastic or stainless one.

 

MK1 hard tops with Rivage mouldings do actually look cool, I'll confess :D

Yeah i will be doing everything myself including any bodywork repair that may be needed ie cut out rust, weld in a new piece of metal if needs be (need to get a welder though!) but i am hoping to find one that wont really need anything like that doing to it, maybe just a bit of surface rust that can be treated. Mechanics and drivetrain etc are no probs, the engine will probs be the last thing i work on. Im not sure i will get a GTi purely because they fetch too much money, and for some reason i prefer the look of the small block ones :scratch: so would just get the engine running well just to drive it about whilst restoring the exterior/drivetrain/interior. The only thing i wont do is spray it, i will strip it all back but will obviously have to get someone to spray it then i will put it all back together. Engine wise, i was thinking perhaps a KR engine on bike carbs :nuts: but i dunno yet, the corrado will be the performance toy once its turboed etc so the mk1 will purely be for cruising and looking cool :lol:

 

And it will all be documented on this forum if its allowed :D

Nah im not a fan of mk1's with clipper bodykits on. Doesn't suit it imo, its pure simplicity. Old style bumpers with chrome. Plastics on the arches removed, single headlights and then just slammed on its arse on a set of wide 13's
