Leonard 0 Posted January 30, 2009 Hey thanks m8 that is great! Just trying to decide wether to do everything now whilst I change the clutch or wait a bit longer... :confused4: If you have the Wiki guide you can email me that would be superb Matt :)
KADVR6 0 Posted January 30, 2009 theres a brand new kit for sale on ed38 mate
mariojoshi 1 Posted January 30, 2009 If your gearbox is coming off.... I'd say defo do the chains! Most VRs are certainly coming up to the point where they could do with a check. However, you're in a good position to actually have a physical check over them and see what's what. If the car is going to be off the road for a week or so, could always wait, inspect and then do it if need be. What's your mileage?
Leonard 0 Posted January 30, 2009 Well that's the thing car has 'only' done 84k and feels pretty tight. Certainly not very noisy. But then I thought I may as well get my local guy to do the chains whilst he is fitting a clutch. Then when I take car to Stealth after that to get the 263 cams and VSR fitted get new tappets then. Do I need new valve stem as well? They arent the same as tappets are they??? :confused4: LOL Cheers guys Matt

gogsboy 0 Posted January 30, 2009 Is that all compatible kit then? All VR's identical as far as chain parts go? Can this also be bought from Ford
Leonard 0 Posted January 30, 2009 heres the link mate http://www.edition38.com/forums/index.p ... pic=204098 Cheers bud. I have just bought those exact ones off the same guy ending his auction early on ebay  Could have saved myself £2 if I had seen that Edition Ad earlier  Matt
MonkeyVR6 0 Posted January 30, 2009 What mileage do the chains need replacing? I've just passd 90,000 miles and my engine is noisy :confused4:
mariojoshi 1 Posted January 31, 2009 http://www.arz-tuning.de/shop/product_info.php/info/p734_VR6-Dual-Timing-Chain-Kit.html :confused4: Trying to work out whether to get the big V @ stealth to just order it all in, or get some parts myself.

Storm Warning 0 Posted February 18, 2009 How likely is it that the flywheel needs doing too when changing the clutch after 100,000 miles? :confused4:
mariojoshi 1 Posted February 18, 2009 I'd imagine unlikely?! Never heard of anyone replacing a flywheel.. other than to get a lightened version. Please correct me if I'm wrong guys!

MonkeyVR6 0 Posted August 19, 2009 Have this major job coming up me thinks. Am replacing the gearbox at the end of the month anyway, so figure I might as well do the rest of the stuff. I don't suppose that anyone knows if I were to supply the parts for a garage what is the average amount of labour they'd charge? :?
VR6Joni 0 Posted August 19, 2009 To replace the gearbox, its no more than an extra hour to do the chains so definitely worthwhile. VW quoted 10-12 hours (none of the mechanics there had done it before though) so would be in excess of 1K. I recon a specialist could do it in 8 though and that's being generous. So it all depends on what the hourly rate is. I did it on the drive in 4 or 5 evenings taking it steady, unless you've never used a spanner or have no tools its easily do able by yourself, plus a friend for gearbox handling. Have a quick read through the guide on the wiki.
MonkeyVR6 0 Posted August 19, 2009 Well my mate and I are changing the gearbox and clutch anyway, of which he's more than capable, although I didn't know how easy it was (or not) to do the chains and tensioners...people seem to make quite a big deal of it. KIPVW 0 Posted August 20, 2009 Certainly not planning on doing mine when I get the clutch done next week! Dont be daft!!! Get it done while its off, i know of a very well respected chap on here who's tensioner was in bits with only just over 70k on the clock and this was down to low miles not high miles. It's a complete no brainer to me if the gear box is coming off  :cuckoo:

LOL My gearbox has been off and on more times than my underpants the last 6 months! Complete nightmare :( Anyway my chains are all done now. As you say my upper tensioner was down to the rivets on my 84k car. I honestly dont believe there can be any VR's out there now that don't require the chains doing. Storm Warning 0 Posted August 20, 2009 I honestly dont believe there can be any VR's out there now that don't require the chains doing. Matt When mine were done at just over a 100k there was barely any wear on tensioners, I guess you just don't know until you get at them. On the other hand my clutch was quite worn and there was a couple of hair line cracks.
