skinnyman9000 0 Posted February 28, 2009 Firstly i put this here because i didnt know which section to put it in, so mods feel free to move it if necessary. Ok, ive been having some trouble with my car starting, i changed the starter motor this morning but its made no difference (£75 well spent). Now i think its the ignition barrel. If i turn the key as normal it wont start, but if i give it a hard aggressive turn then it fires up, which leads me to believe its likely to be a contact problem within the ignition barrel. Does this sound about right? If so, are the ignition barrels straight forward to swap? And does it have to be a rado specific one? Or can i bag one from a mk2/3 golf? Or maybe even a mk4 so i can have a flip key? Any help appreciated.
VR6 0 Posted February 28, 2009 Moving to Interior as it does sound like an ignition swtich problem.
will.s 0 Posted March 1, 2009 hi skinnyman9000!! i had the same problem on my rado and the answer is that you have a dogdy ignition "swich" not "barrel" if you take the plastic suround of around the stearing wheel you will clearly see the ignition barrel and there will be a plastic "thing" on the end of the barrel, this "thing" is the ignition swich and i can be removed by unscrewing 1 tiny screw but you are suposed to take the barrel of first but i managed to get the swich off without doing that. i think that most of vw's cars from 1989-1996 should be fine but you are best off getting a new one for £5-£10 to be honest mate. hope you can understand that and it helps haha cheers will
RaddoMan 0 Posted March 1, 2009 get a polo one 6A , better made ? its a right bitch to get that screw out get some good screwdrivers handy and a mate to push your dash inside so you can just get the driver in their. Raddo man
Jim 2 Posted March 1, 2009 Sounds like the classic ignition switch problem to me mate. Just get a new one from VW - they're a newer type which I don't think fail as easily. And prepare for the most frustrating 2 hours fighting to get access to an invisible screw.. when I finally got mine undone, I was about 5 minutes from just taking a hammer to the car. skinnyman9000 0 Posted March 1, 2009 Excellent stuff, i'll get one bought tomorrow. As for the difficult screw, it wouldnt be a corrado if it was simple to do, everything on these cars is harder than it should be
Jim 2 Posted March 1, 2009 The oft made suggestion of getting a long very thin screwdriver (8 inches or so) and then bending the tip is the way forward - worked for me.
RaddoMan 0 Posted March 3, 2009 did it with a normal screwdriver took all in an hour , there is a wicky on it
renson 0 Posted March 3, 2009 I took my drivers seat out when i did it, made much more room which made it much easier. I did have to bend a screwdriver to get to the screw but it didn't take more than 45 mins. Was a bit awkward but not too bad really. got mine 9/5/08, P/N: 6N0905865, Desc: Barrel IGN £21.69 inc VAT. If your car is like mine it will still be the original switch. Don't think there is an alternative, however mine lasted for nearly 13 years and has probably been turned at least twice a day since new.
Yandards 0 Posted March 3, 2009 I will say once its done make sure you don't have a bundle of keys hanging off the car key, it doesn't help the already slightly dodgy switch last.
RaddoMan 0 Posted March 3, 2009 yeah a 6n ones are the best
Lufbramatt 0 Posted March 3, 2009 i gave up faffing with a thin screwdriver and just took the whole ignition housing off, you need a gear puller to get the spline adaptor off, but once thats off you can get to the switch in minutes, just a case of putting the key in the barrel to disengage the steering lock and one 6mm allen key to undo, then slide the ingition housing off the column and swap the switch out without any lying in the footwell with a torch nonsense. put a polo 6n one in mine, bout £17 from the dealers.
