TT anyone?

Recommended Posts

Im back into the coupe scene and wondering if a (now affordable) TT 3.2 is in order, or a VR Corrado. Has anyone here owned the TT? I've looked for a good forum with buying tips and not found one yet; Im slightly bothered about the Quattro, and trying to research this costly cambelt malarky - for which I basically understand as doable at 60k miles for anywhere 500 to 1000 squid.

Or is all n sundry going to tell me what my heart says, Go VR6 C.

well the 3.2's have chains rather than cam belts so id be concerned if you got charged 500-1000 for cam belt change :cuckoo:

corrado all the way though!

ok, chains. The conversation was long and confusing with my mate and the big £ signs kept being mentioned. I did however take it with a pinch of salt and hoped an audi was as equally solid as a C. I presume its costly because we're talking big labour costs; is it engine out?

well at 60k i doubt chains will need chainging, my mate just changed the chains on his VR at 120k and iv heard of r32's being similar if not alot better. not sure how to do chains on the 3.2 to be honest but if its anything like the VR you can do it with gearbox off but easier with engine out.

60k is about cambelt time on the 1.8T models, but you're only looking at about £300 for the change (including a new water pump). I would expect the chains, guide and tensioner on the V6 engine to last much longer than that.

I have heard that some R32 lumps have been known to do 200k+ miles with only normal services, that's with standard chains and even clutch! I wouldn't worry about doing chains at 60k really, would be a waste of time and money!

They are not £400 a year tax they are £215, the TT's after 06 are £400 though.

Ahh yes, forgot the 2001-early 06 tax is less than 06 onwards... doesn't say which year he's thinking of buying though... ;)

If it is going to be your daily I would go for the TT, my wife is going to get a v6 one I went for a test drive in one a couple of weeks back and it was brilliant. I use my vr to work every now and again and on a weekend. I love it and will never get rid of it but as I said if I could only have one and it was a daily it would be the TT all the way.

Once you have been out in one your question will be answered, also try and have a go in a dsg they are great.

If you buy one dont use the TT shop

ROFL Best advice ever!

If you are thinking about a TT how much work on it will you do yourself? Have a really good look under the bonnet, and chat to the service guys, from reading a few threads they sound like a bit of a pig to work on, like most modern cars, a feat of packaging over ease of mechanical ingress!

My heart says Corrado, my head says corrado for being able to work on it. But the C is getting so old, there'll be all sorts that could go wrong, water seals etc. I had a Golf that leaked in some unknown mysterious spot and drove me made. Flip side of the coin, iv’e a new job that so close that I don’t mind breaking down every so often. But it’s the overall feel, having test driven a TT and driven a modern car for the last 12 months, I kinda like the tight feel and cannot remember how the C felt, other than it felt old. Drove my mates Fiat Coupe Turbo this week and it felt so loose.

Two Face – too indecisive!!

I've gone from a standard 120k VR6 corrado (had 2 of them) to a standard 90k TT 225 coupe.

The difference is quite remarkable. The TT is more stiffly sprung than the corrado so has less lean in the corners, however conversely the TT also rides over rough roads much better than the Corrado ever did (must be in the damping). The TT rattles and clunck a hell of a lot less.

The TT handles better when pushing on, much less understeer and you can get on the power earlier without the front wheels losing grip (prob due to quattro). The TT is a bit quicker, and much more comfortable on the motorway. The mod cons are better (climate control, air con, heated leather fantastic) and the interior is a few notches above the C in quality.

Theres not so much feedback through the wheel - the steering is a little numb on the TT, not as sharp as the C, is does seem to need sharpening up some - maybe the DEFCON mod will help here. The TT feels better balanced - the C Vr6 did feel a bit front heavy in comparison.

IMHO a standard TT is a better sports car and a better cruiser than the standard C VR6. However theres not as much room inside, its nowhere near as practical. It doesn't make a very interesting noise, doesn't get you excited like the VR6 does. Also the TT is not as good looking (IMO). The TT is not hard to work on really and theres loads of help and how-tos on the engine on the internet. Parts are a bit more expensive for the TT and there is more of them to go wrong!

Pretty much how i feel about it all, bloody brilliant car and i only have the 180 quattro, i prefer it in everyway compared to my Corrado and i really mean that.

The TT will feel newer / more solid. But it just won't have the soul of the Corrado :)

Burn the hater...

I actually dont know what a Corrado soul is anymore as mine is so far removed from what a Corrado is.

I love the clinicalness of the TT how it just gets on with it and does whats asked.

I just don't see how the TT can feel even remotely special when you see about 50 of them every time you go anywhere! I do love the look of them, but I just enjoy driving a car you don't often see on the road. The soul is part of that!

I personally enjoy driving a car that drives great regardless of how many i see. It feels like im in a Porsche from the inside with the whole roof line shape. So if im also getting this right then, a old school Skoda/Lada, you would also enjoy driving those as you dont see many on the road infact even fewer than the Corrado  those must have way more soul than anything

Im not saying the TT is THE car to have im just saying they are a good choice hence why there is so many cos they are so good.

I did only say that the rarity on the road was a part of it. Not the be all and end all. But in some ways you reinforce my point as I'd say, arguably, that those cars probably do have more soul. Old cars just do! So you can keep the derisive 's to yourself.

And as I say, I'm not saying that the TT is a bad car either - I keep saying that I like them, and would almost consider one if I could afford one. I just hate the image, and the fact that you see so many of them on the road. If they were made in more limited numbers, they'd be a bit more special - but they just aren't.

Yeah I agree entirely. The fact that people say, ooh not seen one of those for a while or thats in great condition and they love the corrado makes you feel all warm and fuzzy inside. On the flip side someone has keyed my TT already so people like that too but it obviousy raises very different emotions!

It is nice however to ring a dealer and ask for a part and it is already in stock  and not be told that its on order from germany never to appear or its discontinued and have to spend an hour trawling the internet looking for one :D

Jim I agree, My previous C had soul. Was that because I was intimate with it, due to the requent fettling?

Yes, the C is rare. It also has an active spoiler, and i cant afford a Mk2 TT. :p

Thanks for input Ian, the TT does seem a practical answer. And I'd look silly if I broke down going to a meeting for work.

Great feedback Was8v, but the noise aspect, I'd be after the 3.2 TT, so Id expect a nice burble. You're right, theres more stuff to go wrong, mech and elec.

Go with your heart mate :D TTs are 10 a penny, so you can get one of those any time. Good Corrados are becoming very scarce indeed. And well looked after Corrados don't break down

Yeah you'll get that mate. Newer cars benefit from stiffer body shells because they have to pass the latest crash protection crap, plus the newer, more modern interior materials shelter you from the elements a lot better.

Corrados are ancient by modern standards and is practically a MK2 Golf, which dates back to 1983, so try not to compare a modern car to a fossilised one. But if you compare a 1994 Corrado to a 1994 Escort or Calibra, then christ alive, the Corrado feels like a Bentley.

The Rado is a very tired platform now mate, up to you if you want to invest in it, but it's still a good one all the same!

Personally speaking, if I had a TT I would be bored stiff of it after 10 minutes and would immediately modify the hell out of it in order to inject some "Life" into it.
