Ice White Socks 0 Posted December 26, 2003 Hello, My VR seems to have lost its vavavoom. It starts/ idles/ runs fine but has just lost its 'shove' when you drive it hard :? I was thinking along the lines of Crank Position Sensor. Where is it? and is there any way I can test it without paying VW lots of cash to hook it up to the computer? black66 0 Posted December 26, 2003 Hi, Is there anyone with VAGCOM or a garage with an alternative similar diagnostic system near to you? Could be cam position sensor(hall sensor) that has failed. This will cause a loss of 30-40bhp and also lower mpg. When I got my VR this had gone, but the software I was using said crank sensor had gone also. This wasn't the case. Apparently when the hall sensor goes it brings up both failiure codes. Should it be the hall sensor(more common than crank sensor) then the codes will need resetting. Hall sensor is £35 from VAG. Ice White Socks 0 Posted December 26, 2003 Dave- Cheers for the reply- you know I actually meant the Cam position sensor all along- I must have had too much of the old sherry :oops: :oops: What I should have asked is does anyone know where the Cam position sensor is and are there any tell tale ways of testing it without resorting to VAG COM? The only way to see if it's dead is to hook the car up to VAG-COM or plug an oscilliscope in parallel with the sensor when the engine is running. The plastic cover is held on with two 'star' bolts- how can I get them off- do I need to get a special VW tool or will halfords sell what I need? black66 0 Posted December 26, 2003 If the change in performance only happened after a thermostat change, then maybe they did leave the connector off. Although this may have a different effect than a failed cam position sensor. Otherwise: Part number is 021 907 601 A and description is Impulse sensor. And cost is asround £35. As for the star shaped bolts, you may be lucky enough to have an allen key that fits perfectly as I did. The tool you need is an 8mm spline, Halfords sell them. If it's disconnected, the ECU will report "no signal". If it's connected and dead, the ECU reports "implausible signal" because the voltage is too low or erratic. Either way, the overall affect is the same!
