What does the Fuel Pressure Switch do?

If the pressure drops after running the car, the switch makes the pump run. Though it should only come on if the fan is also running at the same time.

Just to elaborate on that a little more.

 

The pressure switch will only come in play after the engine has been run and switched off and the thermo switch (little brass switch on the fuel rail to manifold bracket) has a temperature of above 90 deg C. Then the coolant fan will operate at the 1st stage, after 2 mins has elapsed and providing the fuel pressure switch has a pressure of above 1.2bar then the fuel pump will run to maintain fuel pressure in the system. The reason for the time delay of 2 minutes and the requirement for 1.2bar of pressure is if the fuel system has a leak the pump will not be filling the hot engine bay with fuel.

 

The maximum running time for the both the fan and the fuel pump is 10 minutes, all these functions and timing for the fan and pump are controlled by a pair of relays - at position 13 and 14 above the fusebox.
