how to fit new recaro bolsters?

Ive got a pair of genuine leather Recaros, and Im also about to buy new lower bolster foams, but how do you fit them?

 

Ive fitted new bolsters into mk2 golf gti's, and yesterday, changed the drivers side bolster on our Corrado G60 standard seat, but dont know where to start with the Corrado Recaros.

 

Anyone done them, or know how to do them?

Are you getting the bolsters from Capital seating? I'm going to be doing something similar in the near future and was wondering where the best place is for replacement Recaro seat parts.

Bolsters on Corrado Recaro's are different to the more often seen MK2 or Ford style, not sure specific bolsters are available

Anyone done them

 

I've taken mine apart to clean/inspect them (foam was still good so left them) and found they came apart fairly easy. The hard part was getting the metal rods to catch on the metal tabs when putting back together.

 

Best to take the seat out and put it on a bench. Remove the webbing from underneath. From there its a case of opening the tabs enough to remove the covers. From what I can remember, the fabric is bonded underneath the seat cushion.

 

Let me know if you're having any specific issues and I'll try and relate my ramblings to pictures !

I cant remember the name of the company, but I stated they are for a Corrado, and they seem to think they do them, will post it up when I remember who they are

Hello from the USA. I speak American English rather than the "British English" that was my only choice of language. I hope that you can understand me.

 

The seats should disassemble in the same manner as MKII.

 

Remove the base by removing six allen-head capscrews. Cut any zip-ties needed.

 

Remove the plastic hinge covers by pushing the three plastic pins through and gently pulling the covers free. Remove the flat hinge clips on each side. Fold the seatback forward, spread the part that has holes for the hinge pins and remove the seat back from the seat cushion section. Set it aside and take care of the wiring for the seat back adjustment motors.

 

Outer edge of bolster cover is held by a wire running in a seam in the bolster cover and hooked 4-5 places on tabs punched in the seat frame bottom. You will have to remove the plasic cylinder piece which is the catch for the seatback locking hook. This is held in place by a phillips-head machine screw. For some reason, VW uses permanent(blue) locktight on the threads. I think the screw requires a #3 phillips. Because of the locktight, you can easily strip the head of the screw if you try to do it by hand. My 18V battery DeWalt drill with the hammer drill setting removes them easily. The loose edges of the cover are contact cemented to the frame at both ends. You can loosen them by hand easily. You may now be able to work the cover off of the foam. The foam is lightly contact cemented to the frame.

 

There is a more involved but easier method of foam replacement. The center seating section is held to the frame by plastic channels which are sewn to the upholstery and hooked to a long tab on the frame at the front and rear. They are also hog-ringed to the frame halfway down each side. Cut the hogrings(you'll need hog rings and hog ring pliers to replace them) and work the plastic channel off of the frame. You'll then be able to lift the center section, exposing the same style wire on tab attachment of the inner side of the bolster cover. This method allows much easier removal/replacement of the cover especially if it is leather rather than fabric.

 

Good luck and please post that alternate foam source as Capital no longer has MKII specific foams. They now sell Escort ones which must be modified.
