Central locking not working

might need a bit more info:

 

what happens when you turn the key in the drivers door lock? Does the pass. door/ boot/fuel cap lock?

 

can you hear the pump (located behind a panel in the boot, driver's side) making any noise?

 

Do you have an alarm? Does that lock any of the doors/boot etc.?

 

If the sunroof/windows are open do they attempt to close if you hold the key in the "locking" position ?

 

Have you checked all the fuses?

Have you tried it from both doors? It should. If it works from the pass side you may need a new handle or the one you have reconnecting? Any noises from the pump at all.

Sorry, should have given a bit more info...

 

Both locks work in their own right, i.e. you can lock them with the key, but its a bit of a hassle! I thought it was down to the passenger side lock as it did not have a lock button so I took th epannel off and noticed that the pressure/vaccum switch was missing. A trip to the local scrappie and a lot of fiddling laterI had fitted a new one, but alas still no joy.

 

I then tracked the main pump down in the boot and reconneced the filler cap p/v switch, but still no joy.

 

The fuse is OK (I think its the 21st from the left) and I do hear the pump trying to work, but intermittently. I guess it could be a duff pump, or dodgy connections on the drivers side lock, but this is as far as I've got and wondered if anyone had faced similar problems....?

Is the pump running and sropping all the time when the doors are locked? If so you have a leak somewhere. The pump senses the loss of vacuum and tries to keep the locks sucked down.

 

You say both locks work. What I was asking, does the passenger door lock the whole car? It sounds as though you have a few different snags at the same time.

Try disconnecting the pipe on the pump and seal the pump off. Then lock the door(drivers?). The pump should off course run and stop. Maybe twice, the second time for the deadlocking. Assumming that goes ok. You probably have a leak somewhere else and need to trace it. I had this with a 93 Passat. The pump had been running intermittently and eventually melted and stopped. The nerw pump still ran intermittently until I traced the leak which I think was by the drivers door.

i have a problem with mine too. It unlocks car, but i get a buzzin noise behind the fuel cap that takes approximately 30 seconds to fade away. Its the same noise as when i unlock the whole car except it just carries on. Wat could be wrong?

Just stick an Audi 100 pump in, stronger and quieter.

 

Check the front door orange vacuum hoses as they sometimes rub on the window glass, which wears a hole in them.

 

The pump motors also tire with age, hence suggesting the beefier Audi one.

I've just bought a new pump from the scrappies and it seems to be working. The pump is now functioning when I lock it and so far its locking both doors, boot and fuel cap so looks like the pump was faulty. The only problem now is that the pump only works on the second turn of the key on opening, so takes to key twists to open all doors, which might pose problems for RCL when its fitted...unless of course this is the way its supposed to be? (When locking it up it only takes one key turn)
