Steering Wheel Play

Recommended Posts

My steering wheel has play in all axis. It seems to be due to the pivot for the height adjustor which houses two threded pins, one each side, threaded I assume for extraction...? Is this a common problem and if so what's the fix, new pins? It doesn't wobble at speed so its not a tracking/wheel ballence problem.

I had up and down movement in my steering wheel.

What you need to do is remove the lower steering column plastic cover (3 screws) and locate the pin that engages in the height adjustment teeth, you should be able to see it on the left side.

The pin will have come out it's hole in the casting at the right hand end, all you need to do is tap the pin back in, don't worry you won't knock it out as the casting hole has been deformed to prevent this.

Before you put the cover back on just have a play with the height adjustment and you will see why it had the play in the first place.

Cheers for that, but does the pin sit flush with the outside of the casing or seat into it? I can push it in a coupe of mm, but that's it, will it go in further with a bit of 'gentle' persuasion?

The pin doesn't quite sit flush, about 1mm off if I remember. I tapped my pin in with a steel pin and hammer but at some point it will not go any further, at that point stopping hitting. Worked for me.
